Re: Need some ID's
I agree with Kreos on the first one. The second one looks just like my Sasa kurilensis 'Shimofuri'. They both need to have their rhizomes restricted unless you've got a lot of space to fill.

Re: Ricinus communis ‘Impala’ lovely colouration, and seedin
I think you have the pick of the bunch there. I've grown 8 or 10 species/varieties of Ricinus over the last 10 years or so and 'Impala' is the best imo. It reliably sets good seed which keeps for up to three years so you should never need to buy seed.

Re: Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis'
I've had one in the ground for a couple of years and it is already producing quite large culms (2.5cm x 4.5M) but still very tightly clumping. I love it.karl66 wrote:Who else is growing this variety?

Re: difference between Amomum subulatum Elettaria cardamomum
Elettaria cardamomum has bright green pseudostems and I remember the flowers being terminal. Amomum subulatum has dark red pseudostems and produces basal flowers, at least it's supposed to, mine has never flowered. Amomum dealbatum is a handsome beast, pseudostems 4-6ft tall with large green pleated...

Re: Abbotsbury Garden Visit Today
Gonna try to source either seed or plants of Silver Shield as its a stunning mix with the apple greens of cannas and bananas They look good alongside purple plants as well. This year I've planted them next to Aeonium shwartzkopf IMG_0792.JPG They aren't frost hardy but very easy to overwinter in a ...

Re: Abbotsbury Garden Visit Today
The silvery foliage plant in the first picture is Plectranthus argentatus possibly the form 'Silver Shield' sometimes seen in garden centers. i think the plant in the second picture is a Salvia but I'm not sure which one.

Re: Hardy Paw Paw
Here is my two year old Vasconcellea candarcensis (Mountain Pawpaw) flowering at the moment. It is about 6ft tall. These don't need to be overwintered as warm as Carica papaya, above 5C is sufficent.

Sasa kurilensis 'Shimofuri'
I've had this boo in the ground for a couple of years and it has remained quite small (about 3ft high) and well behaved.
I think it can grow as large as the species, i.e. up to 8ft. Has anyone got a large specimen or seen one growing to that sort of height?- Wed Sep 05, 2012 3:35 pm

Re: Identification of Mixed Up Ginger Seedlings
Not an easy job to separate them when they are small. As they mature you may be able to distinguish them apart by their size, leaf shape and colouring. H.yunnanense has more rounded leaves than the other two and the pseudostems are predominantly plain green IMG_0721.JPG H.spicatum will become a larg...

Re: Hedychiums
Thanks Andy, will you have any for sale in the spring! I’m also looking for H.wardii and H.urophyllum. Hopefully have all three available next spring. This year I’m growing Zingiber chrysanthum in my poly and the canes are at full size now just over 4ft... so can I expect it to flower this year… ha...

[quote="Palmer Is it a cultivar or wild collected?[/quote] Tony, it was originally collected from the wild at fairly high altitude in Nepal. I also find it to be just as hardy as 'Assam Orange' and has reliably flowered here in August for the past few years. Another hardy reliable flowerer is H...
