Re: getting confused about plant's hardiness v winter weathe

I think it's all rubbish! We can't count of what these plants are "supposed" be be able to tolerate! The words Hardy & Tropical seem to be laughing at me, and you, and you... and you! Last winter taught me a thing or three. I lost a slew of supposedly "hardy" plants. My entire collection of phormium...

Re: Due 2 winter loss I'm losing that lovin' feelin' 4 tropi

Spotty Dotty (and Kaleidoscope) even came back up here after last winter, it's a surprisingly tough plant. The plant for me that made me think that everything is okay and will get better is Trillium chloropetalum. It's a delightful thing and comes up very early :) Adam, Trillium chloropetalum is a ...

Re: Due 2 winter loss I'm losing that lovin' feelin' 4 tropi

Thank you everyone for your kind responses. With the exception of the major clean-up in the early spring - I, we - my husband and I, wanted a garden that pretty much took care of itself: 30 minutes every week and that's it. A bit of watering in dry spells, the occasional pulling of a few weeds, othe...

Due 2 winter loss I'm losing that lovin' feelin' 4 tropicals

Dicksonia antarctica's - GONE! (ALL of them, 1ft, two 4 1/2ft's, double headed 3ft, 8ft, 9ft, 10ft.) Banana's - GONE! (E...

Re: How easy is it to transplant a Monkey Puzzle Tree?

Thanks very much for the helpful responses. I'm in 2 minds about trying now. I believe I'd have to take as much soil along with the roots as possible to avoid the tree going into shock so it's going to be very heavy to move too. Mind you, at £40 it might be worth the gamble. Geeez! £40! For a 7ft M...

Re: Do you think it will be a drought summer?

No rain here in the Cotswolds for near a month. Fatsias look worse for wear. Have been watering individual plants as needed and set up the copper sun sprinkler for 30 minutes in the fernery yesterday. Would like to see 2 good days of rain every 2 weeks. That would work for me.

Today I bought 2 Boo's!

Borinda papyrifera from Mulu and Fargesia murieliae 'Jumbo' from Jungle Giants. Both 10L. Paid about £110. for the 2, incl VAT & ship. The Borinda being the lions share as it is the HTF boo of the year it seems. One boo to replace a palm, the other a Dicksonia antarctica, both lost this past winter....

Re: Tropical Front Gardens

Our front garden is a courtyard paved with the same sandstone pavers as the back garden. We did it at the same time as the back garden & side path between the two. Took up all the ugly concrete pavers and bothersome grass and put in sandstone. So much nicer. We created beds that are filled with larg...

Re: Cutting the top off my tree fern

Glovemeister, yours looks far healthier than mine ever did in this situation. I'd be inclined to wait and see what happens with yours, could be a wait tho. How long do we wait? No visible croziers on any of my 7 Dicksonia antarctica's. Not a one. Zip. Zilch. The three biggest require a ladder to re...
