My new Tetrapanax rex
I will guarantee in 2 or 3 years your neighbour will start to get some pups coming up. I've already had at least 10 pups so far this year, my plant has been in the ground since 2009 & I now get them coming up upto 6m from it. Having said that it's not a problem in your own garden, they snap off ...

Dasylirion Advice Please
Doesn't look like there's anything wrong with it, the leaf tips are supposed to look like that.
They're very drought tolerant & require very free draining soil & thrive on neglect. Keep it on the dry side over winter as they hate being cold and wet

Musa cheesmanii and Musa yunnanensis
I had some experience with yunnanensis a few years ago, I'd read that they had some hardiness so bought 2. I found out in their 1st winter that they weren't that hardy, I had basjoos and sikhimensis of similar size and all had similar winter protection. Only the yunnanensis died

I'm also Midlands (Telford) & have now got a few years experience on what does well...or not...Trachys are bullet proof, get waggys as well as Fortunei just to mix it up. Sorry to say but canary palms & Washintonias are not long term, with protection they will survive some winters but the 1s...

Cordyline Australis
I sowed some seed last year for the first time, I collected the seed in 2017, sowed in spring 2018. I did nothing special, just in multi purpose compost. I had a high germination rate, probably over 90%, in the autumn I selected the strongest seedlings to keep going over the winter & some of the...

Bought new Trachycarpus Fortunei
Are you sure it's a trachycarpus? Trachys don't pup but chamaerops do, some places still call chammys 'trachycarpus exelsa'.
If it is a Trachycarpus then it must be a seedling & not a pup.

Re: Winter 2017-18 losses
My treeferns are all in rude health but only because every winter I cut all the fronds off and wrap well (as if another Dec' 10 is coming) However, my biggest concern is the state of my cordylines as they have quite a bit of damage, almost every growing point has pulled out but at the moment are sti...

Re: Planting for butterflies
Most species of butterfly will only lay their eggs on a specific 2 or 3 species of plants, most of which are native 'weeds', shrubs or trees. As Kris says-no catterpillars, no butterflys

Re: General Potential for Cold increasing.
Can I just say Stephen that if in a few days time someone shoots you down for exaggerating the cold pay no attention, I like many would much rather have been informed of the potential cold & been prepaired rather than not know anything untill the last minute & not been able to do anything
