I took one out that wide. I split it in four in situ and dug out a quarter at a time.

Re: Delosperma Soil Help

I put my Delosperma Cooperi into poor ordinary soil. This is a photo of them. They spread like wildfire only beaten by Lampranthus.

Re: evergreens for pots

I have two Cortaderia Richardii in two pots.
Everyone remarks that it unusual but they all like them.
Can survive the occasional drying out if you forget to water them.

Re: Rock Gardens

Stone me Kindred, thanks for the first link Im not sure if I like it, but as a builder I can appreciate the time, money and effort that has gone into creating the garden. If any one is thinking of creating a man made rock garden they could do worse than take a look at Dewstow gardens, Caerwent, Sou...

Re: Bamboo damage - Sparrows

I use a Hawk Kite to deter birds, particularly blackbirds and sparrows.
It works. The only nuisance is that you have to change its position every couple of days or else the birds get used to it.
Doesn't deter swallows for some reason, though. Maybe they outfly hawks in real life?

Re: A cacti delivery - which ones are ACTUALLY hardy?

Delosperma Cooperii is tough.

Note! Flowers only open in full sunshine and it was cloudy when I took the pic a couple of days ago.

I bought forceps for handling and weeding between things like cacti and agaves. Brill.

Re: How I love the Yucca Gloriosa...

I like my Gloriosas too, (under a covered pergola). Planted about a year ago.

Excuse the state of the bed; an army of sparrows keep digging up my sempervivums to have dust baths. :( :(

Re: Agaves and arid gardening

Haven't a decent picture to hand but my Agaves and Cacti will stay out all winter. They're under a glazed section of a pergola and rarely get watered. The rain can't get under there either. Suppose I'll have to water them eventually. :( http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j49/scattery/second%20album/I...

Re: Best bark chip for my money

I now use rotted leaf mould for mulching. Way better then bark chips, I think.

I get loads of leaf mould from neighbours, stuff it in a 1 ton builders' bag, stomp down on it hard and a few months later when the leaves have congealed, beautiful leaf mould mulch. :D
