Forum still live?

I'm still here, but it seems that a lot of users have forgotten this site. Shame as it's an excellent resource.

Front garden make over (Part 1) - pop the kettle on

I built pyramids over the last few years to over winter the Agaves. This worked well and I haven't had issues. Since I took the first photo I have sourced some nicer polythene that lets in more light. Last year I added Xmas lights for a bit of fun and was pleasantly surprised at how good they looked...

Front garden make over (Part 1)

The Cycas revoluta (larger one) is over six feet tall and shows slight yellowing of the leaves. These are last years leaves and have been through a winter. I was hoping there would be a new set this year, but the plant seems to like to leave a couple of years between leaf production. IMG_1808.JPG IM...

Front garden make over (Part 1) - pop the kettle on

Sorry about the multiple posts. I'm having a few snags getting the images to upload.

The Agaves are quite large now and have grown rapidly since I planted them in 2018. The larger of the plants (approaching six feet tall) was about 18" when planted.

Front garden make over (Part 1) - pop the kettle on

Hi Folks, so four years in from the makeover I thought it would be good to have a quick look at progress. In addition there are a couple of images showing the over wintering pyramids I created for the Agaves. In the four years I have had one failure (Butia Capitata) and a partial collapse of a Yucca...

Temperature difference in UK

Thanks very much. It's a great plant for outside in the hot border as it gives a bit of colour. I've kept this outdoors before and it has come back in the spring. It did look quite sad for a while though. Best to bring indoors to a greenhouse or house when it's chilly.

Temperature difference in UK

Hi, I suppose elevation will come into it. I live half way up a hill and so I avoid the frost pocket at the bottom. Our garden is also protected by buildings and trees so some shelter is also afforded there too. Can I ask what type of Tradescantia do you have? I am after T. pallida purpura if you ha...

Temperature difference in UK

Hi All, I saw Yorkshire Kris' video today regarding frost damage and it highlighted for me the differences in temperature in the UK. We've not had a hard frost here yet. We've had a couple of nights of 1 deg C and maybe a zero for an hour in the early hours, but nothing too serious. I certainly don'...

Propagation units

Hi, Just one thing more about the Vitapods. You can buy extra layers as I have done. So, for example mine are 4ft long, but have three tiers. That's about 18" tall. If you want extra height then four tiers etc. The only problem is that this adds to the cost quite a bit. I bought mine years ago ...

Propagation units

Hi, I am not sure how useful this will be as you mentioned professional, but here goes... I have been using Vitapod propagators for about 12 years now and I think they are great. I bought the first version and I believe the units have been upgraded since I purchased. Mine didn't come with lights. At...

Amazing Maderia.

The coconut (Cocos Nucifera) was impressive. There were a few of them about. Here's another shot from a different specimen. 20181024_083534_HDR.jpg The whole place was fabulous and I can't wait to go back. I don't know if I had a favourite botanical garden as I liked both the major gardens equally. ...

Monte gardens really are superb and I could happily spend the whole day here. DSC00993.jpg DSC00997.jpg This lovely Cyathea can be found in the town gardens just outside of the main Funchal centre. PSX_20181024_164921.jpg Some lovely palms at the harbour. PSX_20181024_194920.jpg PSX_20181024_171628....

A few more from the Madeira Botanical Garden. DSC00887.jpg DSC00913.jpg I could have spent ages in the palm and cycad garden, but by this stage my wife needed a break/chocolate/toilet/coffee/snacks/rest and I was pushing my luck by now. Amazing Maderia.

One of the main reasons I wanted to return to Mareira was to revisit the botanical gardens. The two major gardens are the Madeira Botanical Gardens and Monte Tropical Botanical Gardens. Both are outstanding and worth visiting. Having said that the whole of Funchal is well planted with fabulous munic...
