Re: Competition - ugliest cycad collection

I think it could do with potting into a much bigger container, looks well under-potted.Use a soil based compost with some extra grit(20-25%).Fertilisers like Chempak don't give much in the way of trace elements, plant looks very hungry to me.Don't use the chicken poo liquid, but get some Maxicrop or wh...

Tiny Gunnera

Has anybody come across Gunnera prorepens or Gunnera magellanica & more imposrtantly grown them?.Gunnera prorepens has tiny, deciduous foliage maybe 1-2" tall, most un-Gunnera like plant you could come across.G.magellanica has leaves that @ least look Gunnera like, expect it only get's to 6-10" tall. m...

Re: Anybody dug up their Ensete Maurelii yet?

I was surprised how much root damage it took over winter. To be honest,I'm coming to the opinion it's better to buy new ones each year to use as bedding, well a couple would equate to half a dozen trays of bedding plants & you wouldn't expect to overwinter them.

Re: Competition - ugliest cycad collection

Looks like it could do with a couple of rump steaks stuck under it to give it some feed.

Re: Yet another unremarkable summer

Looks like the weather 'up north' has migrated 'down south',cold & damp here today, with a cold wind.

Re: Anybody dug up their Ensete Maurelii yet?

Mick, not everything is in pots,do have a good many plants in the ground, but 'maurelli' isn't hardy enough,& it might not grow as big in the pot,but doesn't suffer rootloss in the digging up processs.Mine in it's 35litre pot suffered major rootloss overwinter,to close to the glass in the greenhouse.I...

Re: Cordyline "Festival Burgundy/Grass, Red Fountain"

Dave, tried it a couple of years back after finding it at a garden center near Ringwood, but it never survived 2008/9 winter.

It certainly seems less hardy than C.banksii, which is only just do-able here.

Re: ebay

Buy from proper suppliers & you have some come back if the seeds are bad, anybody can sell whatever they like on e-bay.Sorry,if you get crappe,it's your own fault.Sites like e-bay will break better suppliers, then you'll be left with e-bay crappe.

Re: Containerised Gunnera

Nick,I beg to differ on the size Gunnera's can reach quickly. My only previous arrempt was with a tinctoria in the ground in less than ideal conditions - far to dry,yet it still reached 5' tall in it's first season.Plant was in a 5 litre pot when bought,so not a big plant. The same plant was subsequen...

Re: Melianthus Major

Di,mine had always come back until winter 2008/9,only put in a slight reappearance by early August & got totally trashed last winter. I've tried 2 or 3 times from seed Jo,but never have had any pop. I'm probably going incur a lot of peoples wrath, but I think Melianthus is over-rated.Probably does be...

Re: Containerised Gunnera

Caroline,I'm in engineering,DMP isn't something I come across.I did appreciate your suggestion & didn't mean to be sharp,if I was,in response.I thought a lot about creating a wet area using pond liner or plastic tarpaulin from the builders merchant, but I get more that say it's more trouble than it's...

Re: Come on lets post some pics of the garden 2010

'Soddin' is an abrievation of 'sodding'.Hardly a swear word as a 'sod' is description of a lump of turf. When they get a local bigwig into at the beginning of a project, you'll see a pic in the local rag saying,'this is so & so cutting the first sod',
