Re: Aloe polyphylla rocketing away

I've got some surplus fresh seed in stock if anyones interested at £4.50 for 5 or £9.00 for 12 plus 90p postage.

PM me if interested.

For germination the water method as described above works by far the best and autumn or spring sowings are the best times of year IMHO.

You need a taller greenhouse Darren

I've not grown an agave from bulbils so I'll be interested to see how you get on with it.

An ovatifolia. I have the blue version called Frosty Blue. This adds to the attraction IMHO

Re: plants for my beach

Hi Phil,

agave salmiana ferox, ovatifolia or maybe a montana should go well. personally I have found the ovatifolias the toughest of the lot over last winter. Also I find ovatifolia to be a relatively quick grower for an agave.

Ross,

I wouldnt bother with the heat if it were me. The cover, ventilation and drainage are the keys as the guys have said.

Re: Is this worth a go

I find agave desmettiana to be a quick grower. Ideal for pots as they are only good for -3c at best when mature. Other than that salmiana is probably next best and they are much hardier even in variegated form.

Totally agree with Ross and Dave. Leave them in their pots overwinter and plant out in late spring earliest.

Re: ebay

Sorry to hear of your experience Jonny. I propagate my own plants and import but the imports are done legally and part of the process invovles a good dose of industrial insecticide and a inspection by the authorities before the plants are given a phytosanitary certificate. Then the plants are inspec...

Re: Agave americana in flower in Hastings

I saw one with a flower spike about 18' tall in the front garden of a terraced house in Portreath last week. I hope the owners have kept a few offsets.
