the other thing it could be is waterlogged.considering the amount of rain and flooding we've had it could be saturated ground depending on how good the drainage is in the soil.bamboos like water but not waterlogged i.e. 'wet feet'.

yeah they are a bright pink.a good example of how a clumping bamboo like fargesia robusta grows.

i leave them now,they usually die back to the ground by spring.during a mild winter some survive to regrow in spring.

bamboos growing in november

some of my varieties have decided to shoot very late in the year,probably due to all this rain and mild weather.the new growth probably wont come to much but it is unexpected.new shoots on nigra,henon,spectabilis,fargesias and vivax.

yeah you need to propagate from rhizomes its a bit hit or miss.out of all the rhizomes and rootmass from this years spectabilis prune(there were lots) ive got three viable plants that have gone to friends.

this is the best time of the year to do rhizome pruning which is what your doing karl.it can be hard work but worth it.if rhizomes are are on a mission to find new areas to grow where you dont want them to chop them off.i've just removed yards of spectabilis rhizomes that are hell bent on going walk...

nitida can grow quite tall i've seen a specimen around 16ft.rufa on the other hand is much smaller around 6 - 7ft.

fargesia scabrida june this year
scabrida is great with a lovely peachy orange colour to the sheathes especially when wet.fast growing and hardy.mines 3yrs old and already 8ft with plenty of culms produced each year.is always the first to produce culms in early spring.

i do karl.it is a nice variety that has a delicate look with plenty of frothy foliage.it is well hardy coped well with december 2010 completely untouched by sustained -14c.about 9ft to 10ft height,clumping and the culms take on a nice purple brown colour in early spring after winter.new culms can ta...

6ft to 7ft at the moment,most of mine are over 20ft now.it really shows the canes off well when you take the lower branches off.
