Re: New Palm Tree

Are you going to trim the roots or just plant it as it is? Some people would hack them back a bit to encourage new root growth and my instinct would be to do this, but I can't say I really know what's best. I planted a slightly sickly looking bargain Trachycarpus a few years ago, and I suspect that ...

Re: From VIRTUAL to REALITY (BLOG)

Glad to see you posting again Kyle, your videos capture the imagination.

I don't do facebook either, and I'm sure there must be plenty of other dinosaurs like me at HTUK.

Re: Gingers

Assam orange survives the worst winters for me, I just give it a mulch, as does Cautleya spicata. I've tried and failed with quite a few others.

That's an interesting one - is there a risk that protecting them early may encourage them to push out croziers before the worst of winter is over?

Re: Anybody checked their Dicksonia Antartica's recently

No knuckles apparent yet on Dicksonia antarctica's planted outside, and I hope it stays that way for the next few weeks. I have a C medularis and a D squarrosa in pots in the greenhouse, to be honest I'm not sure what they are doing.

Re: Tree fern protection survey

Well normally I employ some sort of protection to my tree ferns but so far this year I've protected nothing as the weather has been so mild. I'm a little bewildered by the measures that some members (who live in milder areas than I do) have already taken, but that is of course a matter of personal c...

Re: FARFUGIUM JAPONICUM 'GIGANTEA' ?

Herbaceous here too. I thought they were everywhere? I seem to recall other people saying that they managed to keep them through the winter :?: Oh well, I feel better now that I am aware that others are in the same position as me. You could well be right though I haven't heard this myself; either w...

Re: FARFUGIUM JAPONICUM 'GIGANTEA' ?

Bumpy Ride has proved rock hard Aureomaculata - had two; the one in the more exposed location died, the other one has been fine. Kaimon Drake was fine until this year when it didn't really show. I dug it up to give it some TLC and it's doing well now. I suspect slugs may have been at it. Gigantea ha...

Re: This is a beauty (exotic garden London)

It's Dave Brysons garden from EPS. Largest Princeps in the UK... its come up before. maybe that explains the low viewing, as he hasn't been the most popular person on forums  Which is a shame, if not entirely surprising. As well as having a marvelous garden he was party to one of the most rem...

Re: Musella lasiocarpa protection 2013

I'll have to try leaving one out again once I've got one to a reasonable size in a pot (Ive already dug up about three small ones this year). The water bottle method sounds like a good idea but i'd never keep it going, a bag of straw I could manage!

Re: What is the consensus on overwintering Brugmansia?

I keep mine in the greenhouse which is kept frost free (ish). They get the occasional splash of water to prevent dessication. I've kept small ones / first year cuttings in props kept above 5 deg, watered a little more but not enough to keep them growing. Much the same as Derick really. I have no pro...

What winter low temperatures do you get Mike?

I always dig mine up having lost one outside (covered) prior to the recent run of bad winters.
