Today its sunny so far albeit a bit hazy at times and about +11c. On the plus side no frost is forecast for Southampton for the rest o...

Re: Hello from (the other) County Louth

Hello Jeff and welcome to the forum. The Trachycarpus and that Butia should be hardy outside in a sheltered spot I think as they grow outside perfectly well here in Southampton. The Roebellini in the right hand corner of your picture will be okay in the conservatory but will need minimum heating in ...

Re: Britain on course for hottest ever summer [Daily Mail]

I can't work it out... as 1976, which is the best summer of my lifetime, was not an El Nino, and was just after a solar minimum in the 11 year cycles icon_scratch Not sure what caused the Azores high to sit over us all summer. Many people tend not to remember that 1975 was at least for us on the so...

Re: hardiness red cordyline vs. Phoenix canariensis_CIDP

Hi Bill, do you mean Torbay dazzlers when you say yellow striped cordy's. I always understood they were more tender than red star. They could be Axel, but I am not sure. The ones I have seen are about 2 metres tall and are in perfect condition. I remember seeing them planted a few years ago and hav...

Re: chances for central London to be subtropical this year

March average so far: 10.4C. So we are on the right track icon_thumleft A lot more palm trees should be grown in London but the problem is many of the houses in the city area have such tiddly gardens. The tiddly gardens can be an advantage... wherever you plant your palm, it won't be too far from a...

Re: hardiness red cordyline vs. Phoenix canariensis_CIDP

I haven,t really noticed any red cordylines in Southampton but the again I haven,t looked for them. But I have seen a number of tall yellow striped cordylines about that came through the winter of 2010 with hardly any damage. As for CIDPs there are a few about that are recovering well from that awfu...

Re: chances for central London to be subtropical this year

A lot more palm trees should be grown in London but the problem is many of the houses in the city area have such tiddly gardens. We now know that the Phoenix canariensis_CIDP and Washingtonia palms can grow and thrive there so why not try more exoticslike B armata and A romanzoffianum that should do...
