I wonder if its because they're grown so close together in the second photo? because if they werent up against that wall in the first photo, the wind would blow them over! :? lol

aw ok, the Butia Capitata looks sort of similar so i might experiment with those instead :D

red squirrel: do you think they'll be a good investment for the future then?

and yes nigel, Im hoping to make a tropical bed in the garden and plant 3 Trachycarpus's together :) but going to save up and get hold of some bigger ones so they're different sizes :D

I agree with roger, washies arent very hardy so id leave it in the greenhouse all winter so that its always protected just incase you forget to bring it in and a frost hits :)

Trouble germinating Trachycarpus seeds

I've had a lot of trouble trying to germinate Trachycarpus seeds over the past few months and wonder if anyone could tell me where im going wrong.. 1st batch: 25 seeds - pot of pure compost on hot window sill 2nd batch: 40 seeds - half perlite, half compost in a heated propagator (probably around 25...

Yes I think its called Pinus pinea, commonly Italian Umbrella Pine :) I brought the seeds off ebay and they germinated quite easily actually icon_thumright the leaves are so strange though! lol

I just sprinkled my washy seeds in compost and perlite, watered and put in the airing cupboard :) they started coming up in about 12 days

yes im not sure if I insulated it too early (9th october) but as im slowly building up my plants I dont want to loose any over winter.. so im not sure if im going to need any other form of heat as well to keep it above freezing in there, ive read a couple about parafin heaters :)
