Kris, you may be able to get your hands on some concrete godfathers more easily, as every builders merchant stock them. I have used them to great effect in the past. What do you call elaborate protection? I just mulch the ground with leaves for the winter and If it looks as if it is going to freeze I put a sheet or blanket over the growing point depending on how cold it is going to be. icon_thumright

How many years to get your Echiums to flower.

Looking in a lot of gardening books, most mention Echiums as being Biennials. Mine is in its fourth year and is only just throwing up a flower spike. How long have yours taken. icon_scratch icon_thumright

Kirsten, that looks like an inexpensive way of making round concrete posts especially with some reinforcing steel in the middle. icon_thumright

I would have thought that they need to be ripe and red. Having said that I picked some in that condition last year on holiday and am just about to throw them away as they have gone rotten.! I kept mine at 30c-35c in a propagator in a see through container between damp kitchen towel. Not much use to ...

The Magnolia leaf loss could just be the time of year, some evergreens lose a lot of leaves at this time of year but regrow them immediately. icon_thumright
