How do the Edulis Bamboos get so big in Cornwall?

On my trip to Cornwall I was shocked at the size that the Edulis bamboos can reach there, why is it so hard for us slightly further north to attain this size? The Nigra Henosis was HUGE there as well.

Re: Where can I buy eucalyptus plants today?

To give you an idea how fast Eucalyptus gunnii grows here's two pictures of one from my Gran's garden, it since had to be coppiced as I noticed the rootball starting to rock! It is now regrowing strongly and most importantly securely lol. http://i44.tinypic.com/ojnzvp.jpg 3 months between the two pi...

And the icing on the cake is the private beach. Did you go to Lamorran Garden near St Mawes? Won't get a chance to go there this year, I'm being dragged off to St. Michael's Mount and the Seal Sanctuary tomorrow  Fern Rob some of them looked so old I would not be surprised if they have been th...

Trebah Gardens Pictures, Butia, Dicksonia antarctica, Gunnera, Huge Boos

I took all of these photos at Trebah today, if anyone ever visits Cornwall you have to go there, there are literally hundreds of old Dicksonia antarctica outside unprotected with lush big fronds. The first picture is of the tallest Trachycarpus fortunei in the whole of Britain! I have created anothe...

Anyone tried growing Luma apiculata? (Chilean myrtle tree)

I went to Trebah Gardens today and I loved the Chilean myrtle trees, they have smooth cinnamon bark, small leaves and white flowers around this time of the year.

How hardy are they and has anyone tried growing one?

Re: Where can I buy eucalyptus plants today?

Best thing to do to make sure a euc does not fall over is to coppice it when it reaches 7ft then let it grow up again so the roots have a headstart.

Re: The September garden plan.

1 layer of 30gsm fleece probably only adds 0.5*c to the hardiness. I had a fleece bag over my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP and it still got burned by -4.5*c I used over 20m of fleece to me Dicksonia antarctica in winter 2010 and it survived. Well 20 meters of fleece is probably a lot of layers. Layers ...

Kata if you want to use that for your tree fern you are going to need 5 of them stacked on top of each other lol.

Re: Gunnera Manicata growing well in Large Pot

If your temps get up to the mid 30s you can get good sized alocasia and colocasia outdoors in the summer anyway so who needs a gunnera. I would take the Greek climate over ours anyday lol. Our temperatures went up to 31*c in our July heatwave and the Gunnera is fully healthy, just had to give it 10 ...

someone spraying weedkiller also looks like that.

I have seen very large redwoods at my local park that have foliage literally sweeping the ground around them.

Interesting, there is a massive factory pumping out chemicals into the air around Port Talbot and there are many big CIDPs and mint condition Cordylines.
