You are lucky Dave living somewhere nice and warm ;) for 4 years I protected mine, building a big box full of hay around them with a corrugated lid on the top...couple of years back I decided to leave them unprotected - died back to ground and proceeded to kill my roots. Needless to say I wasnt that...

I don't think its worth trying to "graft" a new one of for the two footers ... but I would for the five footer. Why not? if its a case of sticking a small one in the top for £10 then if it is possible it will take up roots through the old then I dont see a reason why not to try, its not like Im att...

thanks for the replies..

Rob - thats ideally what I was thinking - although I can get a bigger ones for the same price. I think I will give it a go anyway - save me hulking them to the skip ;)

Hi all, Ive 3 Dicksonia antarctica that got wiped out a couple of years ago, 2 x 2' and 1 x 5'. Im pretty sure they are dead from cold damage (1 of them was a bloody bee) so Im wondering if its possible to dig out the crown and plant a baby tree fern inside?
