Re: Musa pups ok for garage or too small

I never dry out basjoo. I simply take them into the garage and leave them to it. They dry out naturally and are not watered again until they come back out in spring.

Re: Squirrel problem

i live next to a wood full of the little grey tree rats. They do seem to enjoy burying all sorts in my pots which i tend to find out about in the spring. Fortunately the cat seems to have developed a taste for them so manages to keep them at bay a bit. Trapping is probably the best option as they se...

Re: Will you protect your basjoos this winter?

This year I am going to dig up the largest one i have in the ground and try over wintering it stored dry as they do in some areas of the USA under the house. Obviously i cant quite do it the same way but will emulate it by storing on its side in the garage. Given it gets cut to the ground outside ev...

Re: Getting the Maximum out of a Heat Matt

i use plastic growbag trays lined with foil then put the matt on that and put the plants directly on the matt. Overhead i use a 20w 6400k spiral bulb in an anglepoise lamp (approx 12 hours a day) and that also adds a little heat as well as light. This works well for anything i want to be sure not to...

A bubbler in a pot should work well if kept warm enough.

Strobilanthes - Persian Shield

Re: nana water protection?

how so? icon_scratch open the top of the bottles and pour in anti freeze to a suitable mix with your water. or do you mean how come you'd be in trouble ? well that ones easy, you dont want frozen bottles around a plant which has a very high water content. Worse, the ice may expand the bottle and br...

Re: Can this sikki pup be seperated from mother and where to

thanks i'll get a small trowel and cut right down next to main stem I think - this wont damage the main plant cutting so close to its clum will it? It doesn't matter if you take a piece of the corm from the main plant in fact its beneficial to the pup and the main plant wont even notice. Just make ...

....and keep it very dry, i find them to be more sensitive to damp storage (and hence rot) than many of the bananas i grow.

If there is a difference with those that i have seen side by side it is to subtle to notice - at least for me. Most likely just a marketing ploy.

Re: Brugmansia Prop

Good point on the cutting that seems the most sensible way to go.
I will read up a bit and assuming it sounds viable will give it a go.

thanks. icon_salut

Brugmansia Prop

A question on propping Brugs. I have a few hybrids and a brugmansia langenbuscher garten which has grown well to 5ft tall this year from soil level in a V formation with two stems. Question; Is it possible to split the stems to create two individual plants providing both have roots of course ? and i...

Re: Can this sikki pup be seperated from mother and where to

Sikki pups in my experience seem very reluctant to sprout individual roots - at least they are a lot slower to do so than musa basjoo. Hence i would never try and separate one i wanted to keep without digging up the whole plant to ensure the pup had Independence roots. Anything else is a risk. Assum...

Re: Container nanas this winter

Does anyone know if Ensette M / V will re-grow from the rootstock the next year in the same way as M. Basjoo? or does the root system 'mush' as well ? I'm thinking in the ground really. I didn't have any this year but something to try in future perhaps, unless you can tell me it's a no-go. Very ver...
