Re: Is it just cold that kills musas?

Its the combination of wet, low temperature and poor air flow that generally leads to rot and finally death in Musa's. This can be avoided in mild winters with care but survival rates will still be dependent on the musa itself as per above you have some chance with a basjoo but little channce outsid...

Re: Protecting Musella lasciocarpa

Since its close to a wall i would probably build a little lean to wooden structure
then cover it in plastic sheeting. That should help to make use of any heat radiating from the wall. The only down side is that it would need venting now and again to get some air circulation.

Re: Musa pups straight in to ground

Thanks Musa Monkey - I will be sure to soak them every day whilst it is warm. Do you think they will be ok this winter to wrap up, or should I cut them down and protect the root ... or should I simply let nature take its course? Am I right in thinking that pups put in to pots should be spared water...

Re: Musa pups straight in to ground

Its late in the season to be planting pups but if you are going to leave them out over wiinter make sure you give them a good daily soaking while the weather is warm for the next few days. It will help them settle in.

Re: Musa basjoo 'Upham Giant'

If anyone was able to get a peice of this, the trademark is not an issue. Once anyone in the public has it it can be propagated and distributed legally as long as the same name isn't used. In addition it seems the trademark isn't even validly applied in the first place, and therefore not enforceabl...

Re: Ensete Ventricosum Maurelii - Pupping

Alan, any chance of an update on this :?: okey dokey............. I separated some pups about a month ago then re-potted the clumps to allow them to continue growing - see the pics below. I have noticed that if I allow the clumps to grow on, the individual plants not only grow independent roots but...

Re: Musa basjoo 'Upham Giant'

The project came to a halt when Dr Francko left Miami uni and moved to Alabama Uni.
Miami Uni hold the trademark on Upham Giant, but but haven't done anything with it.
Shame really, it sounded quite promising for our climate.

Let's see what survives the winter and how they grow on.
I would like to get some size on one and be sure of what it is.

Wouldn't want to pass on a pup to anyone so to speak :?

They are quite similar in some ways. I currently have one basjoo with 8 pups around its base and a lasciocarpa with over 20

I don't *think* my garage went below zero last year but i know it was close.

The one other thought i had was if you are not heating a storage space then using a fan to keep the air moving is a good idea to help avoid rot.
