Re: architectural plants horsham

Why not visit Big Plant Nursery on the way to Worthing.
For Palms they're a much better bet than AP's are.
If you've got a car/van then try popping up to Crossroads nursery on Woodmansterne road near Banstead Surrey as they had a shed load of decent trachys a few weeks back icon_thumright

Re: whats that coming out of the ground

Looks like echium to me.
I had one flower last year and unlike previous years I'm now inundated with weedlings.
They're growing everywhere, the borders, pots, between the gaps in the decking etc....
I dread to think about what's happening in neighbouring gardens

Re: UK grown Alocasia calidora produces seed and seedlings :

Yep,those are the ones alright. Can't seem to survive unless they're on a heatmat for winter and greenhouse all summer long  The calidora went dormant this winter so it's on the heatmat trying to get it going. It's worked a treat obviously and now about to flower. So won't be expecting any dec...

Re: How to start off Elephant ears?

Hi Tom
The pink bulge is the growing point and yes put it in the polytunnel.
Have you got a heatmat you can put them on?
That allways speeds them up.

Re: Hardy colocasias

Not unexpected and i had a few others in the greenhouse that survived fine. I like this plant, very easy to propagate, grows well and over winters well in a frost free space. It is a lovely plant, and normally easy to overwinter....... but I lost mine this year :( Hopefully one'll pop up in the gard...

Re: Hardy colocasias

Never had any problems with my gaoligons Dave I've got them planted out in various places, the main clump is just in front of the big planter that holds my washy.Probably the sunniest part of the garden in winter and in itself the beds been double dug with loads of added manure and sharp sand for dra...

Re: Ghoistly aroid

I'd say thats your variegated mac Scott Mine pups like mad,but never really amounts to much sadly as we just don't get enough heat for them to grow well here. But the pups vary from pure white to all green as you'd expect. The all white ones normally scorch very quickly and die off,not surprising rea...

Re: Hardy colocasias

You got some seriously cold weather though didnt you grub?
We got away lightly compared to most here.
There's still a chance some could come back though. It's only the gaoligons that've been up for months the rest are just reshooting now.

Hardy colocasias

Has anyone on here been surprised by any colocasias that they left out last winter? It's practically a given that gaoligonensis is hardy at least here in our part of the country and mammoths another proving to be hardy. But while looking round the garden this afternoon I noticed that pink chinas bac...

Re: Biggest colocasia leaf. I challenge you!

Hi Carl I've been growing the focus mammoth too. It appears to be one and the same plant as the wilkinsons one along with various garden centres that're selling colocasia bulbs. Obviously a Dutch import, whethe or not it's the same as the mulu and JS one only someone that has them can help by posting...
