looks similar, but I've ruled that out..
Why is it ruled out?
Yew shoots are green at one year old, not orange-brown as here.

Grand Fir Abies grandis.

Fast-growing, and eventually huge - one in Scotland is 64 metres tall (2nd tallest tree in the UK). So be careful where you plant it!

Edit: here's one in Northumbs. (not quite so large, it's only 57 metres tall  ):

Wasn't very bad up here, nowhere nearly as cold as 1981/82. Scotland escaped even better off.

Re: pine trees

Could the appearance have anything to do with growing conditions? It only receives afternoon sun, and all the rain we get washes away the silvery hue the leaves used to have when I first got it. It doesn't really get much attention either and it can get fairly dry in this spot during the summer mon...

Re: pine trees

How do the ones with soft longer needles respond to pruning and shaping? Are they used as bonsai trees? Not very well. Among those with soft needles, only the shorter-needled species like Pinus parviflora are used for bonsai. I've got a P. wallichiana growing in my garden but so far the needle leng...

Re: pine trees

If the length doesn't matter too much, look out for Pinus pumila, that has the same soft touch. Very slow-growing, though.

Local weatherman on radio newcastle reported -7° from somewhere in Northumbs from this morning, the coldest all this winter. Didn't say where, but probably Otterburn.

Re: What makes a Cordyline 'trunk'?

The faster it is growing, the longer the leafy section. So in a year or two it'll have far more trunk than the other one.
