The Best of... A discussion thread

270 views and no replies! They can't all have been automated bots can they?

Was my post too complex?

Single question needed perhaps?

OK. How about 'What are you hoping to grow next year that is new to you?

The Best of... A discussion thread

Since it is getting dark and there is not a lot of excitement to post from my garden I thought I'd start a discussion thread that EVERBODY can add to. I'd be interested to know what people consider to be their 'standard' plants for a tropical look, their best 'special' plants [which may or may not b...

Well a year on and how did they do? The picture below shows and established clump and to the left of it one of the new clones with a flower per bulb. In front a clone with leaves and no flowers. One of the other clones has few leaves and I can't fine the forth clone at all! DSCF6443small.jpg Chad.

Chammy flowering

Chamaerops humilis is usually dioecious although a sucker may 'change sex'. So unless you have flowers on two plants you are unlikely to get seed set, and it is seed production that tends to significantly slow down vegetative growth.

Copper beech hedging

The distinction between 'copper' and 'purple' used to be upheld but here is Bean on the subject. 'Nowadays the horticultural trade (at least in the UK) seems rarely to uphold this distinction, and the vernacular names Purple and Copper Beech seem to be interchangeably applied to material sold under ...

And as an after thought, planting against a fence is interesting.

Is the fence solid or open?

How far from the fence will they go in?

There is no reason to do a double row unless; 1. You will be 'laying it' rather than clipping it, or... 2. You need it to be stock proof [in which case you will need to lay it rather than clip it anyway]. Weeding double rows is much harder work until they are established. On a field scale brambles g...

Tetrapanax help!

Relax. I agree with Jim that over or under watering could do it, but if it is now planted in a big container that has drainage then all should correct. At least until it outgrows the raised bed. Epsom salts are fine as long as they are very dilute and would correct Magnesium deficiency. It is usuall...

Tetrapanax help!

That looks physiological rather than a pest or disease.

Is it magnesium deficiency that hits in between veins?

Whatever, get it planted out into 'real' soil and it will correct itself.

Brodsworth hall/gardens.

It is probably the best preserved and maintained house and gardens of the mid Victorian period; 1860 ish.

Here is a video postcard.

Sadly yes.

The web site is still active and think their son has taken over.

Seed has to be sown fresh; it is fleshy and doesn't 'dry out'. In the UK if anyone has a stock plant [I don't] seed will be ready in late summer. I've never seen it for sale in the UK, but I note it is quoted as 'hardy'. It may be possible to buy it from South Africa in their winter [our summer] whe...

I hadn't realised how hungry they are.

They seemed to need a lot of feed and fresh compost each spring.

I gave mine away! Too much like hard work for the few flowers I got.

Ouch.. (Tradescantis fluminensis)

Welcome to the board Judy,

It is usually available somewhere on e-bay.

It was 'the must have' plant a few years ago.

Then for most of us it became a pest!

I think it is more often passed between friends than sold now.
