Re: Cheshirepalms blog - Its Spring time to cut the grass!

The new fence that was suppose to be put up today has been put back till tomorrow. However the materials were dropped off this afternoon, so my back lawn looks like a building yard and the lawn is going to be like a rugby pitch by tomorrow.

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.

Looking at the pic again they have staggered screening so with new fence in front of small fence a good 2 to 3 foot of lost no mans land lol Also looks like it is rotting, !at fall down when the new fence is erected! The panel closest to the camera is just a panel in front of the small fence that w...

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.

Try to get the new fence as close to the old fence as you can, My neighbours son left an 18" gap between ours which is full of weeds, bindweed being the most prolific, as we have reed screening, guess who has to clear it grrrrr. so i clear a foot and a half in width and about 30ft in length al...

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.

Some bamboo screening for the right side to hide the two tier fence? There will be a new fence completely on my side of the small fence. is the new fence going in front of the small fence losing garden space, or removing the small fence? icon_scratch 1. New fence paint it black 2. Get a retractable...

Re: Planting ideas for a new border.

Good news! The fence is being done on Thursday, which means I'm going to be 3 months ahead with plans for the border. I'm away all weekend but really want to get stuck in and create the planting area. I'll probably put off planting till after the cooler spell over the next week or so, got loads of b...

Re: hardiness red cordyline vs. Phoenix canariensis_CIDP

I would say they are very close in deed when it comes to hardiness. Red cordylines are much cheaper and readily available than CIDPs and also grow much quicker, which might explain why they are more common, particularly further north.

Re: Palms near me

I wish that the council would plant some palms of some description in my area, they don't even do it on the coast were CIDPs would be worth a go!

Re: Tesco Eddoe survived winter planted out!

I've inspected mine today also and they are pretty mushy to be honest, so I have removed all the crud and there is a new shoot coming through underneath. One of the potted ones still has a leaf and is pushing out another, the ground planted ones have not fared as well, but after such a wet winter it...

Re: planting against a fence - how far?

If you want your Canary Island Date palm to survive and be a permanent fixture, then don't plant it anywhere near the fence. I wish I hadn't but its to late now after 2 and half years and not worth moving. Even semi mature trees have a huge girth and spread of leaves. Have a look at this thread. htt...

Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

Mainly cloudy with a breeze, although slightly lighter than yesterday. High 13.8c, overnight low 7.8c, currently its 11.7c. Glad everyone down south is enjoying some sun a least, although I can live with days like this in mid March.

Have put some on top on my tropical fish tank so that should do the trick and other on windowsills and the greenhouse. Re: Your daily weather blog -June 2011 onward

Not a good few days in comparison to the south, with subdued temperatures, but still ok and at least dry. Bit more of a breeze today, and some sunny spells, high 13.2c, overnight low 8.2c ( mildest for some time ). Currently breezy and mainly cloudy and 10.8c.

Re: Tesco Eddoe survived winter planted out!

I left 3 outside in the ground and 2 in pots and 1 in a pot in the greenhouse. They all had leaves until a month ago, but have new shoots coming through. They were from Tesco too, must be a variety that can take some damp wet when dormant!
