Ovewintering Ensete the wild one
I have tried to overwinter these a few times, come spring they look nice and green but obviously not going to grow and slowly die.The maurellis are comparitvely easy but these are a real problem. They were kept last year ticking over,I thought at about 55 to 60 f but this wasn't enought.I am reluctant...

Colocasias and Alocasias don't seem to have done well
Maybe it's just happening to me but this year even the colocsias haven't done well and the old reliable calidora is sending out quite small leaves,in fact the only surprising thing that is doing well and shouldn't if the others aren't is the colocasia thai giant.

How low can I safely cut down a 14foot montbeliardi?
I am wondering how to overwinter a huge montbeliadi ensete. It is about 14 feet high at the moment and last year I was able to cut it down to 6 feet to bring inside to overwinter but this year the central spear is about 8 foot and I'm wondering if I have to cut through this what are the survival chan...

Have a few dicksonia problems
Having lost three reasonable sized ones this year,I have others which have only tiny fronds,I mean about 4 inches in height on a three foot trunk and another fern about 6 feet high has new fronds some of which are turning orange.I thought initially they were bearing spoors but this isn't so,does any...

20 Year old Butia Capita reduced to central spear only
My huge "tough as old boots" or so I thought palm, has only one very firm central spear left after last winter. All the leaves got badly burned, the 8 foot spear is very solid and hasn't moved all summer ,not opened a bit despite being heavily fed and watered.I am wondering whether it's a was...

Re: would a high speed fan keep frost away from top of tall
Unfortunately mine have a neighbouring screen of leylandi type trees preventing the erction of a brolly, the wind also would I imagine take it away. That seems to be a perfect solution in your setting

Re: would a high speed fan keep frost away from top of tall
Moist air would not be directed onto the leaves as the fan would be directed upwards ,surely this would deflect the air away, coupled with the drying effect of wind.I have noticed in the past that irrespective of ambient temperature the leaves are unharmed if protected from above, allowing air to cir...

Re: would a high speed fan keep frost away from top of tall
. Maybe a better way is to use some anti-dessicant spray on your plants which contains waxes etc. and doesn't allow to settle the moisture.
That's a good idea do you know the trade name of this dessicant

Re: would a high speed fan keep frost away from top of tall
Fans are used in orchards to stir the air in order to protect flowers from late Spring frosts. As we all know cold air is heavier and drops down (up to 2 meters above the ground). The warmer air goes up. So fans are usually situated 2-3 meters (or more) above the ground and move the warmer air down...

Re: would a high speed fan keep frost away from top of tall
Hi tenchy, a fan heater would cost an arm and a leg to run, this is outside in the open.I have soil warming cables around the trunk which kept the plant ok last year but the tips of the leaves got frazzled through frozen moisture.or frost on the leaves.
