Do you think the tides affect it? It can't be a bad thing with a high tide rolling in on a frosty night, as the sea water will be much milder than the air above it. If low tides have coincided with night time frosts then it could spell lower temperatures?

I have two red star cordylines, both were fleeced, and two australis one in a pot which i fleeced and the other i left. The bottle brush is large leaved, wish I'd fleeced it now. But I've got lots of other plants and palms to protect.

How does your garden look after that -7C? Chester also got -7C, seems to have been fairly widespread across southern Wirral/Northwest Cheshire areas. Ness Gardens got -4C so I'm hoping with any luck as i'm usually higher than them, maybe it wasn't as bad as first feared.. however they have exposure ...

There is definitely something going on with estuary locations over the last 2 weeks, I'm less than a mile from a 2 mile stretch of the Mersey and my temps are ridiculously low when compared to locations around me. Dave seems to have the same issue with the Thames.

There are also 2 large red stars in Ellesmere Port, stripped to the ground, but are growing from the base. I'm guessing from 2010. But I'd say they weren't protected judging by where are. eg not in gardens that are well cared for. So maybe you may have been unlucky with some plants. On the flip side...

last nights low -7.2 (record for the year), todays high -0.3 currently -1.7 and hopefully on the rise!

-3.7 last night, not as bad as the previous two, however a maximum of -0.4 during the day.

-4.8 last night, was -3.1 about an hour ago, buts its risen too -1.8 as fog has set in. Daytime maximum was +5 although away from the sun there was no thaw.

I recorded a truly shocking -5.2, and with Chester city as Stephen says getting to -4 maybe that’s not surprising as its only 6 miles away and I live on the edge of town. I'm not that far from Stephen and it was -4.5 when i got in from work at 1145pm, its still the same now, but Stephens prediction is just about right and I've prepared and protected accordingly, so thank you!
