Why not just leave them in pots on top of the ground? They are not going to take up much water from the soil if they are in pots in the soil. It might save confusion, misunderstanding and buyers trying to bargain them into the house sale.

I agree with the above comments. Stain involves more work long term as it needs sanding down more thoroughly and its a pain if they discontinue your colour unless you have one of the stains that s more like a paint (solid pigment you can see through).

I've had a Trachycarpus in at the back of our house for around fifteen years. Once it settled in I never watered it and I only started feeding ti last year.
