My son, he is 10, learned about this at school and told me about it last week.
UK rivers have been cleaned up significantly over the last 20 years or so and it is great to see initiatives like this.

Re: Tall Shrubs for the back of a border.
Prunus laurocerasus or Prunus lusitanica.
Prunus laurocerasus can grow quite vigorously in warmer areas (it doesn't up here though).
Eleagnus ebbingei - very hardy and reasonably attractive IMO.
How about a big Euphrobia like pasteurii?

Is that the Sarcococca that your bought last year in flower?
I have 5 of them in my garden and the flowers have opened, but not as much as yours have.
There is a big clump of it on my walk to work in Edinburgh. It is in flower now and sometimes the smell is intoxicating!

A normal (rather than severe) frost isn't a bad thing as it means that the sky has been clear (and dry).

Re: Good news: Re: Winter.
To be honest Stephen I grow my garden really hardy because we often get severe cold spells up here and from a purely selfish point of view I am seriously bored of this perpetual wind and rain as it has turned me into a blinking couch potato!
Stroll on normal winters with cold and mild spells again!

Re: severe storm warning, Wednesday 12th February!
Suddenly sun is shining and not a breath of wind, never been in the eye of a storm before, cant see what else it can be ? This model suggests it was the slack centre of the storm, if not an actual eye, wind now starting up again but still have sunshine. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-app/satell...
