I am indeed tempted. Makes you think with a bit more space you'll get loads of new growth from two halves. Can't help thinking that one nice clump looks nice and mature on its own though.
Decisions, decisions!

Re: Today's acquisition ........
Would be a bit reluctant to lose the height and density that is there already, as that 'headstart' is what drew me to the plant in the first place. Take your point though that it needs some space, but could be just loads around the edges waiting to shoot, but not much in the centre where there can't...

Re: Today's acquisition ........
That's a good point Rob. When you say old canes do you mean the 'woodier' looking ones to thin it out, or are you suggesting a wholesale haircut and allow it to repopulate with new growth only?

Today's acquisition ........
Another weekend ....... another morning of hard graft to get myself a nice bargain! :D Had to dig this lot our of a deep raised planter (about 2ft over ground level). Made it a lot trickier than I had anticipated, as this is a mature clump which had filled every last square inch and was doing everyt...

Re: Digging up Trachys - how much root?
Thought I should finish this one off with a couple of pics of them in the ground. Seem to be pretty solid and steady, have had some strong winds since they have been in and no sign of movement. The big one is tied to nearby old buddleia and couple of supports at the base, just in case. Already had s...

Re: Auto vent opener
Thanks both. Had a look and some pretty bad review for Jemp Vent on Amazon, sounds like they have some reliability/build quality issues now!
Will have a look for Botanico ones at a decent price.
Anyone else able to recommend any other brands?

Auto vent opener
Can anyone recommend from experience a reliable but cheapish vent opener for standard greenhouse? Now temps are starting to get up in the day I need to get this sorted but don't want to overspend or equally buy something cheap that fails and allows the contents to cook!!
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Ceramic pots with a 'shelf'
Yes, it has drainage and yes the shelf is about 5cm deep. Bit strange to put a pot within a pot if that is the case?!

-2.1 degrees on the thermometer overnight, and warm sun to get rid of the frost by 9am, so nothing too bad considering my frosty hollow location!

Re: What makes a Cordyline 'trunk'?
You're probably right, but comparatively this plant is already huge compared to the other one I described, so why does one already have a trunk taller than it's diameter (2ft), while this one is at least 3-4ft across with no trunk at all?

What makes a Cordyline 'trunk'?
I have a substantial australis that is now about 4ft tall, and it's all just 'green' stem with leaves top to bottom. Makes a lovely shape, but why does this one keep growing without forming a proper trunk (it has about 2 inches at the base at a push), whereas I have another (and have seen many, many...

Ceramic pots with a 'shelf'
Bought a nice ceramic pot on the cheap from Homebase last week, and it has a 'shelf' or lip built into it about halfway down on the inside. What is it for? Am a little concerned that if I put a nice palm in there and the root ball works it's way down and fills the lower section of the pot, that it'l...

Re: Crews Hill today
The fronds were definitely a much lighter green than the larger cooperi/brownii ones, so broadly speaking I'd say they look similar. They had made the effort to relabel them from dealbata/medullaris that was on the official label so suggests that they probably are. As I mentioned though, the austral...

Non of the Cyatheas in the pictures are C Australis. There are some Rob, the black pots you can see at the top of the row with the Cyatheas ......... you just can't see the plants themselves!! Hopefully they will still be around in a couple of months if I pop back down, and hopefully they'll ...
