Introducing my garden, from Poole, Dorset

Hello. With the exception of the acers you have similar plant tastes to me but your garden looks completes different! Its so neat and tidy and your dog perched on the end of the sofa looks like its posing for the camera.

Help needed with new tropical bed

That sounds like two of our borders. After nineteen years trying to improve our very well drained soil we have changed the planting and gone for a Beth Chatto gravel style garden, we had a lot of those plants already. Our border naturally slopes so we are mixing in horticultural gravel, the size a s...

Hi, from Hertfordshire

Hello. We put a lot of mexican plants in last August / September. Too early to tell how they will do.

Thanks for the nice welcome. I have thought about some more drought tolerant plants but I hope to create that jungle look. I have purchased 2 200L water butts to hopefully lessen my water bill this summer Yucca and agave do fit in well with a jungle theme. They give a nice contrast to the large lea...

Growing banana from dormant

You could always chop it off at soil level and see if it grows back.

It doesn't look particularly free draining to me, that grit is really fine. I would just have watered round the centre of the pot not wet it all through at this stage.

You make a good point, Zanty. There has been only minimal mention of some of these exotic bulbs. Agapanthus, Calla and Zantedeschia have been featured many times but four years of postings were lost in a site crash last year so maybe it's time to put in new threads on the subject. Perhaps you can g...

musa basjoo time to unwrap

I would say it depends on temperature, soil conditions and size / age of plant. Mine was only very small so I dug it up and kept it in the polytunnel this winter.

It could be several things. You are not supposed to let them dry out when growing so it might not have been watered enough, hence leaf going brown. Bananas like to have a lot of moisture. If its a young plant it may have leaf scorch from too much dry heat or strong sunlight.

Hello. Don't forget to set something up outside to harden your plants off. It will be a temperature shock and the leaves will get burnt if you move them straight outside in May. I spent a month hardening mine off last year in a cold frame but the freak early spell still burnt some of my plants. The ...

yucca aloifolia purpurea

I'm not surprised they survive in Costa Rotherham ,I've started buying my vulcanic rock from around that area!. If you read my post karl you will see I said mine rotted off whereas tender succulents in the same area of the garden haven't. Did you mean volcanic rock? Its limestone here which is sedi...

yucca aloifolia purpurea

That looks like the purple yucca we put in about two or three years ago. It broke off at the stem, not cold hardy enough. I was going to throw it away but someone suggested cutting the dead base off and potting it up. Its growing nicely in the polytunnel. We have tender succulents out in the garden ...

Hi Bryan. It will be quiet here until people start planting stuff out when it warms up a little.
