Re: Palms and other tropicals for northern england

Do you know if it was given any sort of winter protection or left to fend for itself? No protection at all, other than its situation (south-facing, right in front of a 3-storey house). It sounds promising then with a bit of protection I may be able to keep mine for a few years but I need to get thr...

Re: Palms and other tropicals for northern england

Phoenix canariensis was doing fine in a Newcastle front garden for several years, until the 2009-10 and 2010-11 winters hit. The first knocked them back badly, and the second put an end to them. July 2009: Phoenix_canariensis_Newcastle3.jpg Do you know if it was given any sort of winter protection ...

Palms and other tropicals for northern england

Hi I am fairly new to tropical gardening and I was wondering what people have been able to grow with or without winter protection in northern England, especially the north east. Has anyone in the northeast managed to grow Phoenix canariensis_CIDP or washingtonia for more than one season outdoors and...

Re: Washingtonia robusta brown leaves

No havnt got a garage, but wouldn't it die spending 5 or 6 month in a garage with no light?
I wasn't sure whether to keep watering or not. Will it carry on growing throughout the winter being kept indoors?

Washingtonia robusta brown leaves

I have a small washie which I have brought into the house for the winter. It has 3 mature leaves which are fully opened and 1 partially open leaf. The oldest of the leaves has started to turn brown and the second oldest leaf has started to brown a little on one of its leaflets. Is this normal when o...

Re: Trachycarpus nainital hardiness

They will definately be going in the ground at some point but I wanted them a bit bigger before I choose their final spot where I think they will look best.

Re: Trachycarpus nainital hardiness

I have one of those cheap plastic greenhouses which I was going to put over my Phoenix canariensis_CIDP when the over winter. Would the 2 nainital be okay if I put then inside the grow house with the Phoenix canariensis_CIDP? Not sure if it will keep the Phoenix canariensis_CIDP alive but it must be...

Trachycarpus nainital hardiness

I have 2 small nainital in pots, not sure how old they are but the have split leaves but are only about 6 inches tall. Are they hardy enough to leave out over winter?

Southsea Phoenix canariensis_CIDP seedlings

Does anyone have any Phoenix canariensis_CIDP's grown from seed produced on the southsea Phoenix canariensis_CIDP's and have they proven to be tougher than other Phoenix canariensis_CIDP's ?

Re: dates

I only got 2 palms out of about 20 stones, they all germinated but all rotted off except for 2. They have both still only got 1 leaf and they are about 6 inches tall.

Home made root fertiliser

I was just wondering if anyone on the forum has used willow water which is made from soaking the new growth of willows in boiling water to extract a fertiliser which apparently gives plants good root growth?

Re: dates

I germinated about 20 shop bought date stones and potted them up and they were sitting there on the windowsill for about 5 weekes with no shoots so I removed some of the compost to see if anything was happening and found that they had all rotted off apart from a couple then a week later I noticed a ...

Re: Washingtonia robusta

I bought a triple trunk washie from homebase at the beginning of may and divided it into three pots. The biggest one is doing well and has almost pushed out a whole leaf. The middle sized one is also growing well but the smallest one hasn't moved. I put them in the ground and they were battered by s...

Re: Butia vs cordyline

Thanks for the replies. Living about three miles from the northeast coast in Sunderland, I think I'm in hardiness zone 8/9. I know we don't get winter temperatures as low as they do abit further in land but being so far north we don't get the summer heat that they get further south so that could be ...
