Re: Wow this gunnera is growing FAST

Nice plant there 'nicebutdim', I like the angle the picture has been taken from as well... Daz - is your's Gunnera Manicata or Tinctoria? It's growing well whichever one it is! My Manicata is doing OK, but it's leaves are a bit smaller than what I thought they'd be, but I guess it needs time to get...

Re: Colocasia ID Please

On a recent plant hunting trip to upper Berkshire I found lots of pots of aroids at a nursery that are all labeled up as Alocasia Maccro. I told the young girl that it was a colly and she said I was wrong. well we continued to row over what it was with me finally saying OK then its a Alo ( let her ...

Re: Bismarkia Nobilis burnt leaves ,by the sun?

Not grown this palm myself, but having seen this palm discussed on several forums it seems to fall in to the category of beautiful palm but not much chance of success here. Seems to be similar to Alocasia, love water when hot, and loaths it when not. and cannot tolerate water remaining around the r...

Re: Where to get Alocasia Robusta anyone have any ideas

NBD, Do you have a huge 2 story hot greenhouse with a hot tub in it.... If not, you won't get it to grow properly. The write ups are full of disappointed people who couldn't get it to grow. I suspect most suppliers are not bothering if their customers have been unhappy with it before. It nee...

Re: Bismarkia Nobilis burnt leaves ,by the sun?

I recall from the experiance of others that this is a very tender palm, was it out for the recent cold snap and if so what was your lowest temperature? We had a couple of 3C nights which may have been enough to damage a Bismarkia. No it doesn't get left out when the temp is below 5 or 6 ,I have had...

Bismarkia Nobilis burnt leaves ,by the sun?

Thes two pics show the dryness and shrivelling of the leaves ,which I can,t believe is caused by the sun.The plant has been outsice now for about 5 weeks and to date I have cut off three damaged leaves, it was doing ok indoors and sprouting a new leaf .It surely has had enough time to acclimatize to...

Re: Cause of rust on agave?

it wasn't an iron agave was it? THE american variegata description seems to be accurate so I guess that's the one,it is in an open position at the moment so I will move it into a dryer spot.In saying that though, I have just realised a second one I have is totally exposed and the pot is full of wat...

Just can't get my Alocasias going is it just me ?

Re: New thermometer

I bought a remote laser type thermometer for £38 but this gives strange reading more often than not.A small red laser dot is shone on the area to be measures and a digital reading shows up,very impressive to show to someone but not something I rely on.The laser shines about 100 feet but like I said...

Re: New thermometer

David, personally I would have gone for a wireless termpmeter as pictured further up the thread for £9.99 from Maplin. Firstly, you don't have to bend down to read it, and also it is s digital readout so I can tell you at 18:58pm, the grass surface temp is a staggering-5.3C, Screened air temp is +1...

Re: How long to light my propagator

Well my prop is now fully up and running with heat and light. As i am running the 200W lights at night on cheaper electric i need to decide on how long is enough. The cheap rate leccy is about 7 hours i think and this wont be long enough. I was thinking about 12 hrs,say from 7 till 7 or something. ...
