Re: Yucca Rostrata More Popular Than Rigida?
No pic of the plant unfortunately but I do have other seedlings in their 4th year of Y. faxoniana and Y. baccata. These are still in 1.4L extra deep pots and still quite small plants. Bit of a long term project from seed!

Re: Garden Open again this year!
I'd recommend a heat mat. I have a 90cm bio green with fully adjustable temperature in my greenhouse. A "grow bag tray" sits on top and I can get 6 full sized seed trays on it. It provides useful heat when the propogator lids come off but I heat my greenhouse (6ft x 8ft) to 12c also.

The bag method worked for me too. I gave away the one plant I kept last year. Still a small plant after 10 years

Bit old hat now but I used to think "Savage Garden" was good garden background music.

Re: echium pininana protection
Regarding frost protection, I knocked three 6ft lengths of roofing lat timber into the ground to form a loose wigwam type frame and wrapped a 10m length of fleece round 2 plants closely planted. Drawing pins held the fleece onto the frame and whenever we had mild spells of a few days I unwrapped the...

Re: echium pininana protection
I've got a big one in my front garden which came through last winter in situ with help and should have flowered this year but didn't. I had to cut it back quite hard a few months ago as it was growing out onto my driveway. It's responded by throwing out several new growth points and looks decidedly ...

Re: any ideas what this is ?
Looks like Fascicularia bicolor ssp. bicolor, less hardy than ssp. canaliculata and not totally hardy this far north. I've read reports that it's very shy to flower but mine flowers most years around now when I move it into the greenhouse. Anyone growing related Ochagavia's? I got as couple of seedl...

Re: Green Ensete ventricosum
Not had much problem getting them through the winters in a heated conservatory. Just 2 years from seed and they are big plants though and 1 plant is enough for me to overwinter, 20 would be impossible! I followed Dave's advice for the third winter, cut all the leaves and roots off and dried it thoro...

Re: Tree Fern Protection
Words of wisdom Tom. have you lost tree ferns in recent winters? Did any survive? East Yorks can be pretty brutal.
