Re: Musa Basjoo , what do you think ?
Nick, yours looks the same as mine did two weeks ago. After the frost i had a firm one of around 6 ft high, it then became softer and softer until finally the whole thing rotted away.
A shame, i was hoping to have a really big one this year
Greetz from the continent,
Eddie

Re: BBC says -99C for Kent
Looks rather chilly -99C
The bright site is that Kent is probably up for a weather record in the Guiness Book
Dunno if anyone's happy with that though

Re: olive trees
A friend here has got one in the garden for over eight years. Never produced a fruit but is around 10 ft tall i think. :) It has never seen any protection, we took it home from Nice as a tiny 20cm tree and it has grown skywards since. Has lost a lot of leaves once when it was moved to another garden.

Re: 'Cold snap' next week....
10-12C sounds a little high for your average winter day temperature unless you are only taking into account the last 4-5 years. however the whole winter has been substantially below average here, which is disappointing but it had to come eventually Have to admit you're right, the last 5 years were ...

Re: Winter Deathlist
Livistona.. don't know what kind. Passed away with the first sub zero temps.
Bought it from a local flowershop for 2 euri, it grew extremely fast during the summer but obviously couldn't cope with -1C.
I believe the rest is going to make it.

Re: Snow on the way again......
Here on the continent it's + 6 C now. A bit rainy. Looks like it's your turn in the UK for winter wetter. You made it to the news here with all that snow!

Re: 'Cold snap' next week....
Well here at The Hague at the dutch north-sea coast it's around -2 at night and +4 during the day.
Should be around 10-12 C on average winterdays here. I'm getting pretty bored with this winter as well. Whats happened to the influence of the relatively warm seawater?

Same here Dave. On the other side on the continent lots of rain with heavy winds. And no change predicted the coming week
Think we deserve a decent summer now
A very beautful picture indeed

Re: Windiest night for 2 years ;-(
Heavy storm is predicted for the dutch coast, so far it's only been a lot of rain and winds of 7Bft. Our weather comes with a soutwest current from the UK, so the storm is yet to come or is going just past us bringing lots of rain.

Still -2,9 C here with a minimum this night of -5,8 C. Those incredibly low's people get here in Holland don't seem to reach me. But i don't have a really big garden, more of a little patio between my house and the garage. It must be a microclimate between the brick walls. Disdvantage is that there'...

Well, here in the inner city surrounded by buildings things are not so bad. Coldest i've recorded so far is -5,1 C. My Musa is still standing, only the leaves are gone. Must be the healthy influence of the sea-breeze

Re: Winter 2008 / 2009 forecast
I'm at The Hague in the city with a small garden. Looks like being surrounded by houses has its advantages. In more open area's the temperature dropped to -8 or -9 while here the minimum was 'only' -5.1 C at groundlevel. That few degrees could make a difference. Anyway, I'm waiting an sitting it out...
