Colocasia Burgundy Stem may be a run away success

I'm trying an experiment where the runners are left on the plants overwinter and they turn 'woody', ripen. Once this has happened they are cut into sections, each with a bud at a leaf scale node. I put these in the prop 2 days ago, and some have already started to sprout. Propagation in this way wil...

Its an Opuntia Humifusa. As long as you plant it in a spot with full sun and well drained soil, it will do fine. We commonly get tropical storms at the end of summer that can last a week straight. We had 8 inches of rain from one about 5 years ago. During January(coldest month), its not uncommon to...

Certainly looks good, looks like a type of Opuntia to me. I assume it likes dry weather in winter.

Hi Gone troppo, I have Agave americana which grows to full size here. I have not had one flower yet but may only be a few years away. I've given lots of pups away and they are now cropping up in gardens all around here. We need more succulents as our summers are fairly dry, and the latest land scapi...

The Queen Palms are now completely defoliated after the cold month we've had. The lowest temperature was 9F. I'll let you now if they recover. I think after surviving the first winter, they did not recover enough to survive a 2nd winter. We,ve just had nearly the opposite here, we had one cold snap...

Portsmouth Gallery updated with latest visit including the exotic rock garden at Southsea Common. Also featuring the wrapped Butia... bit of overkill I suspect.

Just an update on the Southsea Phoenix canariensis_CIDP. The seed has not sent up a spike yet, although it can take up to a month. BUT... I went down to Portsmouth for a long weekend last weekend, and spent quite a bit of time with the Phoenix canariensis_CIDP. The situation looks like this: The pal...

Any evergreen fertilizer will do. You can find Miracle gro 30-10-10 at any store around here. If you're are also interest in Queen Palm, there is a variation from Southern Brazil and Uruguay with silver leaves. During record cold in Florida, the Silver Queen Palms were the only Queen palms to survi...

Pixie is absolutely right. Even the Southsea CIDPs looked terrible after their first winter. Fronds all burned. There is also another temptation with suppliers... they sell by height and this can mean they have been grown in warm shade to draw them up. This is disasterous when planting out as you ha...

Hi Robbin, Welcome aboard. I think you have been fortunate as they are not reputed to be very hardy, and need quite a high temp in summer to get any growth. Paul Spracklin (ukoasis) has one which it sounds like he has almost given up with, as its growth is so slow, and we live in the hottest part of...

The idea behind the fertilizer is simular to building. First you work on the foundation (roots), the building itself (foliage), and finally add the finishing touches (hardiness). More experimentation should show us exactly how palms resist cold. The plams are still young - only time will tell. I do...

Mick, I left both the trachies in the ground, as i decided they were too big to move and would have damaged the roots too much as they had been in the ground a long while. They would have taken ages to get going again IMO. They are looking great by the way, i visited them at the weekend. Vic, it is...
