Re: small conifer hedge

I have hit the ‘you're not a business’ here as well. Usually here they change their mind if you are ordering a ‘commercial’ quantity. When I was trying to plant a Stipa meadow I ended up using a small local nursery to ‘buy them in’ for me. I will have paid a small premium to the local nursery, but s...

Re: Anyone with a kiwi that had has produced fruit?

This year it reached about 8 foot in height and had loads of pale yellow flowers but no fruit. That is very small for what is usually a rampant vine. Is it in the soil or a pot? Are you prunning it hard to keep it that size? They usually flower close to last years wood and prunning to keep it in bo...

Re: small conifer hedge

Mike, You need a local source both to be sure the choices are appropriate and to reduce transport costs. Have you asked a local wholesale seller? Even if they don't have the stock you are after they may help you find a supplier. BLUEGRASS NURSERY OF KENTUCKY 2291 CLORE JACKSON RD, SHELBYVILLE KY 400...

Re: Tree ID

I agree; Tree of Heaven Ailanthus altissima. Where it is happy it seeds and suckers and is a thug. The male flowers stink. It is also a text book example of allelopathy so it might be a challenge in a mixed panting where it will tend to inhibit growth of surrounding plants. Has anyone actually seen ...

Re: Biochar

You can't use ordinary charcoal, this is specialised stuff. That is sort of right. Any ‘natural’ charcoal ‘fines’ [small bits] will work. You do need to avoid any that has added binders or accelerators. If it is in ‘briquette’ form it will be rich in waxes and oils; that is not only no good for the...

Re: Fig tree

Figs are very tolerant of being cut back. If you want it to fruit then look up specialist pruning . They set fruit on young wood so if you are growing it against a wall you need a clear plan of continuous pruning. There are 117 varieties currently listed in the Plant finder . Unless it came from a s...

Re: Id this creeper please

Just for precision, it doesn’t make it any easier to control; this is hedge bindweed Calystegia sepium.

Field bindweed Convolvulus arvensis is much less of a menace and can scramble a bit but not climb.

Re: Climber suggestions for dry soil in full sun

I think maintenance is the biggest issue rather than choice of plant. The leylandii will grow out sideways and will need twice yearly clipping to stop it coming through the trellis and still looking ‘formal’. If you want to be able to get at it you will limit what you can grow on the trellis. Althou...

Re: Eriobotrya japonica Loquat pruning? *results*

the chop is inevitable soon icon_thumleft I wouldn't do it now myself. If it responded with fresh growth that would then be too soft to get through the winter. Personally I'd do it when dormant. Anytime through the winter in theory. I'm a coward though and would do it in late winter ready for it to...

Yes, both by provenance and by the look of the picture on the e-bay site.

Re: Eccremocarpus scaber (Chilean glory vine) safe to let mi

With roots in the soil it will easilly grow to the eves of a three story house each year in Cornwall smothering everything else. I've never been sure if it is overwintering as a root stock or coming again from seed, but it is not a 'shy grower'!

Re: Fatsia 'Kingston Bus Station'.

The only place that I could find that does Edward Needham's form is Crug Farm and they are expensive and especially as I am still getting the larger plants for the garden Crug don’t do Edward's form, they do a ‘cut leaved form’ BSWJ12499 that they described after people kept asking for Edward’s one...

The Eucalyptus look to be in air pots. Good buy; the pots are worth far more than the plants!

Re: Strong climber/vine to secure a fence?

C.armandii is a bit of a thug and huge. It tends to pull over most supports unless they are very secure.

I fear the set up you show will only work if you drive in some very stout stakes to take the weight.
