Re: Pots

I too have found it impossible to source such pots in this country. James over at Europalms in Belgium has a good selection and is a really nice guy to deal with. Just a couple of weeks ago I received a consignment from him. I had ordered a hundred but because of a supply problem he sent me 130 whic...

Re: Encephalartos ghellinkii cycad set on fire

I'd love to know too if they managed to get it to flush. I've got a couple of Encephalartos two leaf seedlings myself, but I don't think I'll be trying this method just yet. When I potted them up last year, I was struck by how swollen the roots were. I suppose this is where all the food is sto...

Re: my first Yukka where should i put it?!

I planted one of these in my garden a few years ago when they were fairly hard to come by. These days, they seem to be in almost every garden centre. They're quite a favourite of mine despite them being rather vicious. My kids are all grown up now and so I don't have to worry about them getting spik...

Nigel, I have sent you a PM.

I have already posted a cheque, payable to David, but the Bank Holiday might have meant it being held up.

Re: yucca question?

I bought one of these 'purpureas' about 3 weeks ago from Bents garden centre in Leigh which is on the western side of Manchester. It cost £16.99. I must say that I thought this was a tad expensive at the time. They do operate a fantastic plant guarantee though, basically for 5 years covering almost ...

Re: using palm focus and booster correctly

High nitrogen feeds are best for bedding plants, colocasias and nanas. Basically anything where you want big leaves that aren't expected to live outdoors in the winter. I very rarely use high nitrogen feeds except on stuff like brassicas. Yesterday however, I used Ammonium Sulphate on a Chammy to t...

Re: Dicksonia antractica growing differently this year ?

A small un in the front garden is pushing out lots of new fronds. This was completely buried under snow for quite some time and surely proves its remarkable insulating power. However, two out the back are doing nothing at all. Reading elsewhere about some having orange goo at the top, prompted me to...

Re: dicksonia brown sap

A small one in the front garden is now happily pushing out fronds. The two out the back are doing nothing at the moment but fortunately no sign of the dreaded goo. I thought that seeing as a treatment with hydrogen peroxide seems to work quite well with palms then why not with try the same on a Dick...

Re: Hi From Derby

I've got hold of a few Yucca rostrata and rigida seeds and I'm just wondering if anyone knows if they need light to help germinate. I've sown them in small individual pots in a 50:50 perlite/compost mix. These are in my propagator at roughly 25C but in rather an ill lit spot. There's been no germina...

Re: Removing snow from plants.... Good idea, or bad idea?

was the pot frozen when you brought it in? dont give up on it tho. get the middle cleaned out with some h2o2 and dust it with sulphur after.keep dry and warm .fingers crossed. Unfortunately the pot was frozen but I was careful to let it thaw really slowly. So I was gutted when I saw the state of it...

Re: Removing snow from plants.... Good idea, or bad idea?

Up here, in this part of Northwest England, there's a helluva low temp in the BBC forecast for tomorrow night. After a daytime max of -6C, they're predicting -12C in the night. :ahhh!: As Nigel Fear says, there could well be that my covering the smaller palms with snow may actually not be advantageo...

Re: Removing snow from plants.... Good idea, or bad idea?

With some of my smaller palms I've actually piled more snow over them so that they're completely buried. I know that they'll probably sustain some mechanical damage but I'm hopeful that this will be more than compensated for by the protection offered from the severe cold we've got in Northwes...

Re: brahae armata

I've got two of this little beauty, one planted out in the garden and the other in my frost-free conservatory. The one in the garden survived the rigours of last winter and has its own rain shelter. It's probably almost 3feet tall now and has 5 fleece bags over it for protection from the severe cold...
