Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
What are the most colourful bamboos for dryish conditions.
I have found some difficult to grow here? ie P. nigra and vivax are struggling
P. Japonica & P. Aurea cope well in my garden though!

I don't want to plug any one supplier but I have nothing but praise for:
http://www.scottishbamboo.com/
Their plants are healthy - I have just ordered:
http://www.scottishbamboo.com/Phyllosta ... caulis.htm
and
http://www.scottishbamboo.com/Phyllosta ... enzhu'.htm
My biggest success is sasa palmata nebulosa from seed. It doesn't grow too tall but has fantastic big leaves and looks great under trees.

but good healthy plants from a cold part of Scotland.
They know their stuff and can advise on what is good for a certain situation
They sell on ebay too but I usually deal direct. I like them because they don't whack on a big surcharge for delivery to the Highlands. I often get caught out when it says something like "free mainland delivery" - well I do live in mainland UK but for some reason a lot of firms think the northern half of Scotland is another planet!
Delivery from them is.................

Are they potted? Not sure why they would struggle. My nigra is in the ground and has literally laughed at the winter just gone, in fact I swear it almost looks better for it!sam140 wrote:What are the most colourful bamboos for dryish conditions.

Thanks for the info Huporhaha, decent sized pots. Sounds like you get what you pay for. Make take the plunge and place an order.

Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
No they are in the ground and I bought them as healthy 6ft plants. We are very dry but they were planted with a good rich garden compost a couple of years ago Tom.
Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
very strange then, unless like you suspect the dry has got to them. UNLESS I have just been lucky with mine? Didn't you guys get it close to double minus this winter?

I've 3 other decent potted divisions now plus 3 in the ground - but all smaller than the one in the pic.

Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
Most Bamboo need plenty of moisture in the growing season Sam although there are a few which tolerate dryer sites. Yushania maculata is a good one, it does take up room but has the advantage of having a deep rhizome system. Fargesia robusta as i have mentioned is another as is Thamnocalamus tessellatus which is actually from south africa originally and very wind and drought tollerant.
Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
isnt there any way you can get more water to them?whats the soil like has it got plenty of organic material in it?do you mulch them?this can help with moisture retention.
Re: Best hardy evergreen bamboo
Hey Tom,
Have you tried visiting the 'Bamboo Glade' in Keyingham?
Plenty of choice there and you can see how mature specimins have performed in the ground over winter!

I have a couple of these and neither come through winter very well, (-12c here) they survived but look tatty. same applies to Phyllostachys nigraTom2006 wrote:WOW...thanks guys. It has to been -14C and long term cold hardy after this last winter. I am loving the look of Phyllostachys vivax f. aureocaulis think this could be the one for me!
Is this it? http://www.jparkers.co.uk/plant-0001429 ... ow-bamboo/
Fargesia Scabrida, Pseudosasa japonica and Phyllostachys bissetii all came through untouched.
