the more mature the bamboo the more effective it gets at becoming a windbreak.soon as its dense enough it will support its new culms with the old culms.the problem is if the culms are taller than the main canopy and its windy during late may and june the culms are still on the soft side and can snap.i've used guy ropes in the past to try and prevent snapping but it isnt always successful.tying the bamboo up into a bunch while the culms are developing for a few months has worked for me before i managed to save 12ft spectabilis culms this way.tie it up into a bunch about two thirds up and half way.not too tight.this stops a lot of whipping about in the wind.
