Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
How fast does it grow a year, how many fronds are produced a year and how tall does it grow a year ? Thanks
Re: Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
Once they're in and ready to get away Jack they're reported to do about a foot a year
Re: Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
Depending on the plant, some smaller ones may only put out 5
or so fronds a year while other larger plants can grow as many as 30.

Re: Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
It does depend on the plant as trachys have such differing growth rates. I have a small one that is very slow and puts out three fronds a year, whereas another small one puts out 8 a year. My larger T fortunei did nothing for the first year in the ground but in it's 2nd year it grew 7, and has already put out 3 so far this year.

Are they all in similar positions Jezza, ie full sun, south facing etcjezza wrote:It does depend on the plant as trachys have such differing growth rates. Re: Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
Two of my newly planted palms from last year, a Waggie and a Fortunei have only put up two leaves each.
A Fortunei I planted two years ago has put up three leaves.
My larger Fortunei is pushing up it's fifth frond.
A Takil and a Waggie are also on five each.
I think after three years you start to notice them speeding up a bit once they have extablished a good root system. I think the levels of water we have had has also helped to spur them on. Just a little more sun would be nice however

Re: Trachycarpus Fortunei Growth Rate
Just to mix it up a bit, my Trachycarpus used to be very fast growing up until this year, it reached 4 ft in 4 years from seedling... thats a foot per year.
However this winter must have damaged it because it's only put one frond out this year and it is extremely slow. Usually by this point it has already put 6-7 fronds out.
This could be problematic for it should next winter be as cold, in which case I would suggest it could decline over time.
