Jack, can you make the topic title meaningful. If you are asking a question about Washingtonia put that in the title

I've seen a few large(ish) mature specimens around Falmouth and Penzance. Problem is I think they are a relatively new addition to the hardy palms "club" so we won't see many grown specimens around the UK, plus they are no where near as hardy as Trachies etc.

They are my favourite fan palms. I just wish they were a tad more hardy else I would have put one or two in the garden. I have some seedlings growing in the greenhouse which I germinated earlier this year. They are growing very quickly, much quicker than my other palm seedlings.

Dave did you remove the lower petioles right at the base or have they naturally fell away?

Washingtonia robusta is also known as the pettycoat palm, as it does not drop it's leaves. These form a skirt down to the ground unless removed. I don't remove them as dying off I remove them during the spring to get rid of winter damage.

no protection in winter, its on the south coast of the isle of wight, south facing, south sloping, with a cliff to the north. if they cant survive there they wont survive anywhere

winter picture of some others there: http://www.hardytropicals.co.uk/gallery ... re&id=1659
