CAESALPINA PULCHERRIMA-MEXICAN RED BIRD OF PARADISE

Post by Rick1965 »

Hello all, has anyone tried the Mexican Red Bird of Paradise? It is reportedly root hardy to -9c so should be ok where I am however, I am wondering whether it requires high temperatures to flower well. Any info/experiences greatly appreciated.

This species of Caesalpina is not at all hardy and needs at the very least a warm
sub tropical climate to flourish. A very light frost will see it off. It is not
reliable in central Florida or the warmer parts of Texas. It will not flower unless
it has consistently warm temperatures.

I have tried C Pulcherrima and Pulchrirma Flava and not got them beyond a foot high even in a large heated greenhouse. I would stick to C Gillesii.
