Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatula?
Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatula?
I'm intrigued as to whether there are other aloes that are reasonably hardy in the UK?
Ideas and suggestions welcome.

Re: Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatul
A aristarta is hardy to about -7C without protection. Mine form clumps here. When we had the -10C in Dec 2010 they were safely tucked up under a foot of snow.
Best regards
Dave

Re: Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatul
Hi Mike. I have found Aloe Aristata to be even hardier than Striatula. A couple of years ago I managed to pick up a pot with a couple of plants in at a school fete, put them out into my cactus patch and they really took off. They have now grown into quite a clump and saw off the -9deg I had last Winter with no problems, whereas Striatula was cut to the ground.

mitriformis
polyphylla
Aristata
and it might be worth trying aloe x haworthia black gem
tried it in an unheated alpine house and it survived

is variegata / partridge breasted aloe/ tiger aloe hardy if kept dry?
Re: Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatul
I've had a A. Brevifolia in the greenhouse this winter, not sure whether it would have taken -9c outside. Didn't want to risk losing it as there are no pups yet.
Re: Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatul
I have a Brevifolia, left in a pot on the table outside this winter, pups are mank but the main plant is a survivor.

Aloe polyphylla easily takes temps down to -6.0°c here in Christchurch, with no damage.
Aloe aristata is another good one ( As Dave mentions )

Anyone growing polyphylla successfully outdoors in the UK, protected or otherwise?
Re: Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatul
I know two people in Lancs & West Yorks who grew it for quite a number of years until the 2009/10 winter. Protection was perspex overhead or none at all. My biggest one is getting very heavy but i intend to keep it in a pot until I have a few good sized plants. I'd like to get at least one to flower and set seed.Yorkshire Kris wrote:Anyone growing polyphylla successfully outdoors in the UK, protected or otherwise?

There is quite a list of Aloes which can take colder than -7C in "Aloes in Sourthern Africa" by Gideon Smith. I've grown these from seed to try at some stage:
A. ecklonis
A. reitzii
A. mutabilis
A. transvaalensis
A. polyphylla
Seed just gone in of A. lutescens and A. davyana also on that list.
