Are there any other hardy aloes apart from aloe striatula?

Post by MikeC »

I'm intrigued as to whether there are other aloes that are reasonably hardy in the UK?

Ideas and suggestions welcome.

A aristarta is hardy to about -7C without protection. Mine form clumps here. When we had the -10C in Dec 2010 they were safely tucked up under a foot of snow.
Best regards

Hi Mike. I have found Aloe Aristata to be even hardier than Striatula. A couple of years ago I managed to pick up a pot with a couple of plants in at a school fete, put them out into my cactus patch and they really took off. They have now grown into quite a clump and saw off the -9deg I had last Winter with no problems, whereas Striatula was cut to the ground. icon_thumleft

I've had a A. Brevifolia in the greenhouse this winter, not sure whether it would have taken -9c outside. Didn't want to risk losing it as there are no pups yet.

Aloe polyphylla easily takes temps down to -6.0°c here in Christchurch, with no damage.
Aloe aristata is another good one ( As Dave mentions )

I know two people in Lancs & West Yorks who grew it for quite a number of years until the 2009/10 winter. Protection was perspex overhead or none at all. My biggest one is getting very heavy but i intend to keep it in a pot until I have a few good sized plants. I'd like to get at least one to flower and set seed.

There is quite a list of Aloes which can take colder than -7C in "Aloes in Sourthern Africa" by Gideon Smith. I've grown these from seed to try at some stage:

A. ecklonis
A. reitzii
A. mutabilis
A. transvaalensis
A. polyphylla

Seed just gone in of A. lutescens and A. davyana also on that list.
