Removing Cycas offsets

Removing Cycas offsets
I have a very large Cycas Revoluta with three offsets around the base which in my opinion detract from the plants appearance. Are these offsets sapping strength from the mother plant and how do I remove them without cutting into the rootball ?

Mine just snapped off but don't know if this is the "proper" way to deal with them.
