not sure if these are hardy for your area? ....

Magnolia macrophylla

Rhododendron sinogrande

Rhododendron rex ssp. fictolacteum

Euphorbia x.pasteurii

And from Magnolia macrophylla ashei you get flowers much earlier. A normal M. macrophylla takes 15 year to produce flowers. M. ashei is also a good choice for a smaller garden.

Grows in Florida in the same area as Needle palm, Sabal and Magnolia grandiflora near the Apalachicola river. I have seen them in flower there last April

Thats what I would do to. Do they leave suckers behind like T rex?

So now should be ok then rather than leaving it a month or so?!

Kris I think they do grow suckers when removed which is partly the reason for moving it in the first place. The other reason is that I would like to do more with the limited space in the front garden and these would look great planted by the house in the gravel!

Deciduous trees can be moved at any time when dormant. I even moved at rex in january with no detriment to the plant.

Thankyou for the advise! I'll have a go in the next couple of weekends unless the weather turns too cold. I leave home when it's dark and get home in the dark still at the moment so I will see what it will involve and check for suckers too!
