I should think that the tree ferns are spore grown or have came in to Europe with a intact main root and stem. Compared to Dicksonia antarctica that sends roots from the crown due to the loss of main root and goes in to overdrive, as it is trying to do two jobs. I would not do it but it may work on tree ferns with intact main roots.

I'm sure a trench spade will break the roots, should be easy to dig up the Dicksonia antarctica like that.

I think digging it up would be much easier than cutting through the trunk

i couldnt live with myself chopping the rootball off! even if I only manage the b+q rootball it came with which was pretty decent i'll be happy i guess

on a side note how can b+q sell all their Dicksonia antarctica stock with solid rootballs yet most nursery's simply a trunk?

B&Q get theirs in pots so they lay down roots. Most specialist centres selling the logs know they will move them quickly.
Most wanted list - Any Young Trachycarpus and/or fern.
