what plants for colour? not just a green garden

Post by parkeey » Wed May 01, 2013 4:58 pm

Im aiming for a tropical garden, but its a hard one as not many plants are even developed yet- ie bannas, t rex etc just comming out, my paulownia tree that I pollarded for huge foilage has a tiny bud on!! least it made it though the harsh winter. The main focus is I also don't want just a green garden, what plants do u use for colour. I think my garden is going be a mix of some tropical and some not as just cant get enough colour otherwise. what plants do u use for colour?

Heuchera, Hemerocalis and Peligonium 'contrast' are my faves but also Crocosmia 'Lucifer', New Guinea Busy Lissies and Asiatic lillies.

Definitely coleus for me, but I also like to bulk it out with cheap bedding such as lobelia and alyssum. Guinea impatiens also good.

Coleus are fantastically outrageous, another one which I'm growing this year for a shadier area is Iresine herbestii 'blood leaf', equally outrageous I would say. I bought one last summer and have turned it into about 20 cuttings this year, since I'm a bit of a cheapskate. :D
