Fig tree
Re: Fig tree
In my opinion I would make a frame and slowly manipulate the fresh growth to it and tie it back, pruning the branches that don't follow the frame. Whilst a tree is a sapling it is easy to manipulate in to the shape you want it to grow in to, I think its just a long process. I started growing my fruit trees to my fence to disguise them without taking a lot of room like a hedge. I think I will clip them back tomorrow.
Re: Fig tree
I should think you can do it to any tree, its only training it in to a shape.
Re: Fig tree
Figs are very tolerant of being cut back. If you want it to fruit then look up specialist pruning. They set fruit on young wood so if you are growing it against a wall you need a clear plan of continuous pruning.
There are 117 varieties currently listed in the Plant finder. Unless it came from a specialist supplier it would most likely be ‘Brown Turkey’ ‘White Marseille’ or ‘Brunswick’ and leaf shape would suggest the latter.
If planted out with an unrestricted root run they grow a lot of wood very quickly; great if you are stooling it for foliage effect, but a problem if you let it get too big, or if you want fruit. Planting it in a root control bag keeps it under control which is very useful if you want fruit.
