Trebah Gardens Pictures, Butia, Dicksonia antarctica, Gunnera, Huge Boos

Post by greendragon »

I took all of these photos at Trebah today, if anyone ever visits Cornwall you have to go there, there are literally hundreds of old Dicksonia antarctica outside unprotected with lush big fronds. The first picture is of the tallest Trachycarpus fortunei in the whole of Britain! I have created another topic about the Luma trees which were stunning. A mention also goes to Glendurgan Gardens which is right next to Trebah, it wasn't as good but it does have big Dicksonia squarrosas.

Wonderful tree ferns, look like they are in the wild, any idea how old they are?
I wonder if I can convince them to sell them to me

And the icing on the cake is the private beach. Did you go to Lamorran Garden near St Mawes?

Won't get a chance to go there this year, I'm being dragged off to St. Michael's Mount and the Seal Sanctuary tomorrow

Fern Rob some of them looked so old I would not be surprised if they have been there since the Victorian period, some had fronds which were easily 12 foot long, the biggest ones tended to be next to small streams so they had a constant supply of water.

edit: more pictures to come.

These picture are from The lost gardens of Helligan (tree fern heaven).

These old treeferns on the south coast got here back in the day because they were used as ballast in the sailing ships from Aus.
