How do the Edulis Bamboos get so big in Cornwall?

Post by greendragon »

On my trip to Cornwall I was shocked at the size that the Edulis bamboos can reach there, why is it so hard for us slightly further north to attain this size? The Nigra Henosis was HUGE there as well.

I think a combination of age, water, feed, shelter and micro-climate have a lot to play for the size

I think it's age more than anything plus lots of rain.

They look to be about 10 cm diameter (still very good for a UK bamboo). Certainly not 30 cm diameter. Maybe the sign meant girth (circumference)?

Culms of 10 cm thick! Thats a lot! Phyllostachys edulis Moso should be the hardiest thick bamboo till -18 C.

Thickest I've seen anywhere is about 12 cm diameter, in northern Italy.

You could possibly grow Dicksonia antarctica in the ground without protecting them in winter

Yes you can in Cornwall and also here in South Devon.
We have had a tree fern (called "Bruce") in the ground for 16 years now. 3' tall.
We cut off the fronds and put them over the top and then wrap the top with thick sacking, several layers, and tie it around the top,
He was OK for the last cold winters, luckily.
Have a new 5' one purchased from Amulree this spring in another part of the garden, so will leave the fronds on this one, as advised on the forum, and wrap in fleece all over, and see what happens.
We live in view of the sea so this may help with temperature, although last winter everything was well frozen!
