Tropical Hibiscus.

Post by JackShilley »

Hi!

Not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place, but here goes anyway....

I have been trying to find some really nice tropical hibiscus, the kind found on the website 'Hidden Valley Hibiscus' but in the UK? or an international site that ships to the UK? :?:

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!

Jack.

I did do some searching but no luck, not even on Ebay, sorry Jack!

You may get seed from a rare seed site.

I got mine from Tenerife (South) airport.

Hi Jack.

There is not enough demand in the UK for there to be nurseries specialising, but some are available in late spring and summer in exotic nurseries and garden centres. Even the diy sheds have them from time to time. However, I don't think you will find any mail order at this time of year due to the potential of frost damage in transit.
Best regards
Dave

As Dave said, you'll be hard pushed for them this time of year. Lidl do them in the early summer/late spring, but are limited to a handful of colours, no named varieties.

Cuttings are easy to root.

I brought a cutting from Gibraltar earlier this year, it rooted in 2 weeks or so, was outside until last weekend when I put it in the blowaway.

Last year I brought and rooted another cutting but the winter saw it off. This year's plant is bushier and stronger icon_thumleft so fingers crossed. It produced many flower buds, but they all fell off before fully opening, presumably due to too many flower buds to sustain for too small a plant. Maybe next year I'll get more luck.

Look out in the DIY sheds I've got 2 from there cheap, after I fell in love with them in Majorca last summer, If they don't have them when you go, then keep checking. They flower happily throughout most of the year in the house. I have 1 in the greenhouse in summer and house in winter and 1 permanently in the house.

They don't do sub 5c for prolonged periods, I nearly lost one of mine after subjecting it to 1c in the greenhouse for 2 nights. It completely defoliated and has taken a year to get back to its original glory. Ideally they need 10c min and good light, in the med they can cope with any short cold periods as they have much higher daytime temps and the plants can achieve a good size much quicker.

Don't you have a windowsill ??

My mother used to grow loads of these, broke bits off and rooted them etc. Had them outside from May to October then in a cool conservatory overwinter.

The best provider for tropical hibiscus in Europe is...
http://www.kwekerijgommer.com/webshop/index.html

There are others growers in Belgium and Italy but they have a limited catalog.

We have several tropical Hibiscus here. Those you see often in tropical countries. Its where I actually did collect the cuttings years ago.

But spring is the best time to send them I guess. Not now with that bloody cold weather.

Also a nursery in the UK has some.
