Ensete Maurelli, storing in compost vs drying out?
Re: Ensete Maurelli, storing in compost vs drying out?
I dry stored my Maurelli but left most of the large roots intact. The ventricosum was dry stored with most of the roots intact but I potted up in dryish compost a few months back. Both are throwing up new leaves now - potted up and watered 2 weeks ago or so:

i kept mine going all winter on a drip of water once every 2 weeks. All seem ok and have new rollers!
Dry method = never again possibly

I kept mine growing at the back of the living room the winter before last, that was until the better half told me they wouldn't be overwintered in the house again...fern Rob wrote:I have also kept mine in a pot and watered over winter.
Looking to plant in a small pot over the weekend, fingers crossed!

I kept maurellii active at my local school until last month. It was borrowed for a classroom display but was 'attacked' by a young hooligan according to the shame-faced teacher who took it for her class without my permission. The top of the stem and all the leaves were bent over and the entire plant had been pulled out of it's pot. It had been left like this for four days until I came in to water everything.
Drying out method to the rescue. I cut off the top and trimmed what was left of the roots keeping it in an empty pot in the cool garage for two weeks. For the last two weeks it has been potted up 50/50 MPC and perlite in the boiler cupboard and given small amounts of water. Pleased to say the top is moving and plenty of new roots are showing.

I stand them bare rooted in terracotta pots, its great for drying and keeping them dry.

When you pot them back up do you soak them before planting, or plant them in dryish compost?Rabbie wrote:I stand them bare rooted in terracotta pots, its great for drying and keeping them dry.

I've just stumbled across Yorkshire Kris very informative videos on Youtube on potting up ensette tubers, looks like there is some great tips across the exotics range on there....
