What palms to propagate
What palms to propagate
I would like to propagate some palms from seed. This is where it get difficult, I want to propagate something that is rare, hard to get hold of and desirable to palm collectors.
What palm seeds would you suggest?
What would I need to propagate them?
A plant that is rare in cultivation and the wild would be good so the propagation would boost numbers in some way, a little more like conservation.

Re: What palms to propagate
I should also add is there any rare Australian/ New Zealand plants doesn't have to be a palms that would we worth propagating .
Re: What palms to propagate
xanthorrhoea -problem is they only look really impressive with a trunk and you don't want to know how long thats going to take.I have only ever seen in 2 real life and they were not for sale at any price.I have seen some for sale on the internet they were about £2000.They are quite easy from seed,I have a few on my window ledge, after 3yrs they look like a couple of blades of grassfern Rob wrote:I should also add is there any rare Australian/ New Zealand plants doesn't have to be a palms that would we worth propagating .
More realistic options would be
Archontophoenix purpurea (purple king palm)will take a small amount of frost(around -4*c) I have been on the lookout for one for a couple of years without any luck. Some seed would be nice if anyone can help.
I would imagine small cyathea dealbata would be popular.

Re: What palms to propagate
I wish I had a Xanthorrohea of any size even if they where a few blades of grass. I have been looking at some Xanthorrohea seeds but I don't know of anyone that suppliers them in the UK or EU.Half Hardy wrote:xanthorrhoea -problem is they only look really impressive with a trunk and you don't want to know how long thats going to take.I have only ever seen in 2 real life and they were not for sale at any price.I have seen some for sale on the internet they were about £2000.They are quite easy from seed,I have a few on my window ledge, after 3yrs they look like a couple of blades of grassfern Rob wrote:I should also add is there any rare Australian/ New Zealand plants doesn't have to be a palms that would we worth propagating .

Cyathea Dealbata can actually be purchased relatively cheep at the moment, 15-20 cm trunk for around £35 pounds is a good price.
Re: What palms to propagate
Other non Aussie options would be.
Brahea decumbens.
Parajubaea.
Butiagrus-parajubaea/jubaea/syagrus hybrids.
BlueJubaea chilensis.
The problem is,they are all rare for good reasons.

Re: What palms to propagate
Xanthorrhoea seed is available from Sunshine seeds. As with all 'rare' stuff the germination will be unpredictable, but if you don't try you'd never get anything!

Re: What palms to propagate
Dunno about rare, but I have bought seed from both these Australian seed vendors (on Aussi eBay)fern Rob wrote:I should also add is there any rare Australian/ New Zealand plants doesn't have to be a palms that would we worth propagating .
kenni_koala_seeds http://myworld.ebay.com.au/kenni_koala_seeds/
muzzadb http://myworld.ebay.com.au/muzzadb/
Seeds seemed to get here OK without being molested by customs! But YMMV of course.
Other sources of unusal seeds that I have brough from include:

taste.ecrater.com
http://www.secretseeds.com (UK based, still trading AFAIK, but last time I looked their website wasn't doing anything )
georgiavines eBay http://myworld.ebay.com/georgiavines
Scampton Succulents http://scamptonsucculents.mybisi.com/
Other seed sellers I've used which may have Rare / Unusual things, but also have mainstream things, and I buy several things from each of them every year:

Its strange as I didn't think the export of them was easy to do anymore. Not the Mexican grass tree by any chance?miketropic wrote:fern Rob wrote:Xanthorrohea ?miketropic wrote:we have wholesale nurserys that sell small ones so I guess whats rare over there isn't rare over here always
