What new plants will you try in 2014?

Post by GREVILLE »

Who is getting impatient already to build on this year's successes or turn their backs on any failures? What's on next year's want list?

I want to locate Ensete hiniba and Colocasias Thai Giant and Coal Miner. Past losses among the aroids means I want to try again Mojito, Black Beauty and Diamond Head and with the palms, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. On the wish but won't get list is Juania Australis and Musa Ae-Ae.

I got a Japanese climbing fern for my birthday, I'm looking forward to planting that and letting it scramble up the Temple front. Apparently it's root hardy too. It came without a tag so I have to wait to find out the name of it and do a little research but it will be planted out as soon as spring threatens.

I bought an Ae Ae in the Amulree pre-order sale thingy last year, still waiting and heard nothing. Sneaking suspicion it'll be staying on my list yet another year as I'm not importing any more from the U.S or Thailand

I would like to buy a decent size C Lutescen palm next year and keep it in a nice tropical pot and stand it in my side entrance during the warm months.

Most of the specimens I have seen which you can buy from DIY sheds or garden centers are either tatty looking or have got the dreaded scale insects?

And also even those ropy plants cost a fortune to buy and are not worth spending decent dosh on.

Something with a height and spread of about 6 feet would be perfect.
